water droplets first try

this is my first attempt at this, would like to hear your comments.
there is quite a few but i did have to narrow it down our of about 200 shots

Pretty damn good effort

Only crit is that you can see some weird reflections which are (I presume) the bottom of your sink reflecting the flash ? Not a big deal, just a wee bit distracting

Paint in the bottom of the paint tray. Ye it's a bit destracting but didn't have anthing else to work with

Good work for a first effort, most are fairly sharp which is the main thing. My next step would be to add some colour to them by bouncing the flash off a colourful piece of paper.

Or just add a coloured background that reflects off the surface of the water.

OOh fab topic, I have been meaning to try this for a while. Even got some food colouring in for some coloured water. What settings do you go for high shutter speed I pressume? any more tips?

1/160 of a second f11 (I think) iso 400 and my flash gun on it's lowest power

Is a macro lens an essential? How about some cheapo extension tubes?

And what about external flash, required or on camera flash and plenty of light enough to suffice?

A cool thing to try get is a second droplet colliding with the drop that is ejected back out from the water surface, so you have two droplets crashing into each other. It looks fascinating.

If I remember rightly (it was a long time ago) my image above was taken using extension tubes and a standard kit lens.

I had a quick go and managed this. No special equipment and not much experimenting. I'm going to try a coloured version I think

mine were taken with a 50-250 Zuiko zoom at 250 - I did not want the camera too close to the wet stuff. Flash close but out of shot

Macro lens is not essential...but a fast lens is. I used a 50mm f1.4 for mine. External flash is also a must I would say for best results. There's some good tutorials on youtube, try this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwExpFDUC9Y
