Best place to photograph from at Silverstone?

I'm going to be at Silverstone next Friday for the F1 free practice. I'm on a General Admission ticket which gets me to the main areas around the outside of the circuit and granstand access. I've only ever done TD's at Silverstone before never spectated there, so just wondering if anyone can recommend the best place to go to get as close an unobstructed view of the track as possible. I'll have the 2x teleconverter on the 70-200 but even 400mm isn't going to get me very close to the action so looking for any suggestions on the best location to be.

Luffield is one of the few places where you can get an unobstructed view (no wire mesh) if you can get there early enough....it always fills up with monopods!

....apart from the grandstands obviously......

Luffield A used to be really good, but IIRC, it may have been moved since I last took pics from there, but well worth a look see.

Club B(?) (nearest Club stand to Vale) - top corner gives unrestricted view over fence of Vale hairpin into Club - reach of 400mm should be ample there.

Becketts is good for fast side on shots.

High up on Abbey will get you unrestricted shots, too.

Not sure about the New Club grandstand (where I am for the race) but I'm hoping high up will get shots of the pits, at least.

Some decent places on Stowe but you're quite far back.

High up on the end of Village is quite good

It's worth getting theer as early as possible, long before F1 practice and do a lap of the track, and have a look from each grandstand. You'll get a good feel for which are the best locations for you and your rig.

Thanks all. First practice is at 9, I was aiming to be there by 8. Is that too late ?

8 should be plenty time to get yourself a seat somwehere.

However, the more time you give yourself before 1st P the more time you have to get your bearings and settings in each grandstand.

If you're like me you won't move from the grandstand you're in when the session starts, for fear of missing something. If you don't mind moving, the complex offers the most grandstands in a small area.

Thanks for the advice guys. I sat in the stands at Luffield for the first practice, and the Maggots/Beckets complex for the second. Here's a couple of snaps from the latter - I've got 500 to process, mostly tat because of the weather and my appalling hand held panning ability.
