DSLR/Compact video difference

I am photographing a relative's wedding abroad later this year. It will be an outdoor wedding.

With regards to video - they would just like the actual ceremony/vows captured. Nothing fancy, just a camera plonked on a nearby tripod to record it for memories. And that's where I haven't got a clue!

My main DSLR is a Canon 50D so no video there. I can use a Panasonic TZ8 but TBH I've only ever done a test video with it, I don't know what quality is like or whether I can adjust exposure or anything.

I'll be getting another backup DSLR at some point and if needs be, I can stretch to a 500D/1100D which have basic video functions.

Question: Will I notice much difference in either video or audio quality between one of the basic Canon DSLR's and a TZ8?

You're not alone; it's surpringly common to find 'my' corner pre-filled by a hapless relative with a fag-packet-sized camcorder atop a rickety tripod wondering how the hell it works!

I Have the TZ8 and the video on it is ok. If the light is good and you are not taking fast moving images you will be fine. Beware though it can only record a mximum of 15 minutes HD video in one go (due to file size and format on card I guess).
