Not as bad as the tape fing up just before saving a program you'd just spent hours typing in from a magazine listing...
elite for the spectrum was my best game ever. you turn the volum up on the tape play to max to really jam it through, and chant load, load, load, go on. It almost gave as much excitement to just load a game as it was to play the thing.
Shame nothing has come close to Elite even now. Can you get it for the pc? didnt go much on X-com but I hear X2 The threat is better?

yep there was a pc version which was basically the old bbc version with filled in polygons Ooooohhh technology. Then there was frontier I think which was supposed to be EliteII if I remember right. It had a truely dire flight model based on real physics (space physics ie you drift about a lot).

I quite liked the Frontier flight model (first game I had to upgrade my amiga for, 1 25MHz 68030 later and I could actually play it properly...) The speed 'relative to' something is pretty acurate in space.
Java Speccy emulator and Elite is available at www.spectrum.lovely.net but you can't save your game (so it might take you a while to get to Elite staus again ;-))
