Arrived this morning although Game have managed to ship the wrong version...still there's not so much difference so I think I'll just get cracking. I loved the first game, the demo of this was...different.
I'm really hoping the story is as strong as the previous game and most of Bioware's other efforts. The main things that are different in this are the speaking main character and the fact that it;s now more of a button-mash than the first one. Hopefully that won't put me off!

According to some reviews they've cut out most of the traditional RPG stuff (you can't change your companion's armour, for example) and focused on the plot and the ability to make choices that are more shades of grey than the normal good/evil decision.
Also, in Mass Effect conversations you have the good guy option/bad guy option/neutral option that nobody takes, this has been changed to good/bad/smart arse.

Well apparently the plot isn't all that great either.
I'm passing on it, based on the demo and reviews - everythings too simplified and obvious, right down to the conversations. I can't believe they've even put pictures on the coversation wheel for those too stupid to understand a sentence.
I'll wait till there's an all-in-one offer with the DLC.

Well, lets just say a Bioware employee was quoted as saying they were aiming at the Call of Duty console market for DA2. I think that about sums it up...Well I played this a lot over the weekend and it's pretty good actually (takes a good few hours to get into it). The reuse of environments is one area that is very poor though, every cave looks identical. As I downloaded via steam there was no user guide (I could find) either so I had to get one off some random site I looked up on google, and that guide is still useless meaning you have to sort of work stuff out as you go along. Not good for people that are unseasoned at RPG's.
I have to say I wasn't hugely enamoured with this at the start due to the slightly tedious effort of reading the millions of codex entries that come at you and the slightly dull quest involving getting your family home back. I can't blame the codex entries too much because they do really enrich the game world.
I've persisted, and it's really hitting it's stride now. I prefer the slightly more direct feel the combat has now, although it's tougher than the first game was at the same sort of timescale. The quests are nicely integrated, and you can hop between them and tie up loose ends with great ease. The story also feels more direct and streamlined, and it's nice to have goals of a lesser nature than just saving the world (typical RPG fare). Overall, I'm finding it a more engaging title than the first one.

It's good honestly, it's just not on the same level as games like Mass Effect 2 or Fallout 3. I'm certainly glad I bought it.I was playing it on the PC btw, which I believe leads to slightly different (more tactical) gameplay compared to the console version.

The original DA was one of the best RPGs I've ever played and spent hours on end playing it, still have to finish all the DLC on it, but no time... I completely missed the release of DA2! That said I'm a bit put off by what I've read here.... !

Have you not played Baldurs Gate 1/2/ToB? Planescape:Torment? Yes they're old but they are hands down the best RPGs out there, even now.
Mass Effect 1 and 2 beat DA:Origins hands down, sure they're not fantasy, but the story and characters work really well (Makes me wonder where the story writers were when DA:Origins was written)

I have indeed played (and finished!) all BG (and expansions) NWN series, Planescape Torment too (and all on PC), the Bethesda series too, Mass effect I didn't finish, never bothered with 2 (never really got into the sci fi theme). That said, for sheer playability, enjoyment and character involvement (and i absolutely loved the story, the choices etc) I absolutely enjoyed DA:O, spent over 80 hours playing it, and I stand by my judgement!!! I've just got into the second chapter of this and it certainly feels as though it's hit it's stride despite the slow start. I must say I'm enjoying this quite a lot moer than I did the first Dragon Age, it feels a lot more focused and story driven. The trip into the Deep Roads is one of the most compelling things I've played through in a game recently. I'm looking forward to getting back off nightshift in the morning and continuing with chapter 2.
