Black Ops - Suitable for kids?

I am a PS3 gamer...not the shoot em ups, more Gran Turismo etc... I've never played any of the CoD games etc.
A friend lets his kids play shooting games like Medal of Honour and has just bought Black Ops.... his kids will be playing it... as he says you can turn the blood & guts off and its not that bad...... The kids are 8 and 7.
I also have 2 boys the same age and there is NO way I would want them playing this type of game... they are more than happy with Lego Harry Potter and Ratchet & Clank...games that have some comedy elements, some shooting I guess - but not graphic, but games that do ask them to think through problems to reach different levels and I don't see the need for them to be killing each other in graphic detail....even if it is 'fun' etc....
Am I being a prude or is it really not suitable for kids?

I would say absolutely not for kids that age. At 14 or so you're getting more reasonable, but online mode obviously exposes everybody to a torrent of C-worded abuse if you're unlucky with who you end up playing.
The single-player probably has enough disturbing stuff in it for me to say I wouldn't want kids of mine under 14 playing it.

The rating is there because it is so violent, not only does it risk causing harm to the children, but ultimately to the rest of us adult gamers, because sooner or later something will happen involving a child, there will then be even greater crys to ban these games as being too violent.
The 'think of the children' brigade will demand top shelf type attitude to gaming.

Hey guys, I'm in agreement with all of you!
The 'smash the glass in his mouth' has simply re-enforced my belief that I really don't want my kids subjected to it if I can help it.
Which does make me wonder why my pal, who is entirely sensible and reasonable in most things doesn't see the damage it is potentially causing....

He may not even be aware of that scene, MW2 had the (in)famous airport scene, which gave you a warning and the chance to skip the whole bit if you were easily offended (if after the 18cert).The other scene in single player of BOps is when you have the shotgun with exploding rounds, lots of body parts flying off.
Online is a different matter, probably less graphic in animation but a whole world worse with online 'chat', I actually think the worse offenders for vulgar language are kids who try to act the big 'I am' and particularly the american kids who all seem to think is acceptable to threaten various sexual acts to everyones mother!?!

Absolutely. There's no way I would say the Single Player is suitable for kids, the online is a completely different game. Rude clan tags and trash talk by American kids can be a real nightmare. I mute people all of the time, they talk such utter crap!

A similar thread was up sometime ago about the letting kids play CoD games which was interesting. Someone had said on there that you know your kids & you know wether or not your kids are mature enough to handle things like this. Personally I think the 18 rating is waay too high, maybe a 15/16 would be more suitable.
Been playing grand theft auto from the age of about 10, so did many people I know. As long as you know right from wrong, real life from game, why shouldn't children be allowed to play a GAME.
Don't let them watch TV, go to the park or even breathe... they may choke.
Just messing about with that last bit, but seriously, I don't see a problem as long as they are taught what's right and hard wrong. It's just fun.
To the people who say there are age ratings for a reason. Do you seriously feel that you were not mature enough to watch a film rated 18, aged 17, but you could be let loose in a potentially 150mph + machine?
