Lots of Faulty PS3's on ebay...

Was just having a quick browse through ebay to see what PS3's were selling for, and I was very surprised to find every 2nd or 3rd console was 'Faulty. Spares or Repairs' etc. Most of them seem to be, YLOD or RLOD. I assume similar to the RROD on the Xbox360.
Is this Y/RLOD as big of a problem as the RROD on the Xbox? Once fixed (I noticed sellers offering a DIY fix for this problem) will it happen again? Have sony addressed this issue?
As you can tell I haven't really shown any interest in the PS3 at all. I have a PS2 and only 1 game, GT4 A Spec, and TBH, I would probably only buy 1 game for the PS3. GT5

Although not as big as the XBox issue, I think its fairly common with earlier models, two friends at work have had the same happen to their launch spec machines. The other thing to consider if buying second hand is the fault can often be "fixed" by a process of heating up the board with a heat gun to re-solder joints on the board, but it often only lasts for a month or two so you can bet that a significant chunk of second hand ones are PS3s that have failed, been repaired then sold on before they fail again.
So, this problem really only affects 60gb PS3's?? I take it buying a faulty one and trying to repair in the hope it lasts is just throwing money away?

I dont fancy buying another ticking time bomb of a console. My 360 is one of the eariler models, and I'm just waiting for it to go. Its already needs a new dvd drive. The only way it will read discs is if you put the disc in then turn the console upside down

Not if the security seal is broken.Really? 2 friends went down that route, got them fixed, original 60gb and repaired (undeclared of course) console and 100 pound got them a new slim line from blockbuster. Maybe it depends on the staff/outlet, but they definitely swapped them. Apparently all the store did was put a game in it, load it up, play it, then did the exchange.

My mate's PS3 got YLOD a while back. He paid 50 quid to get it repaired, and it was knackered again within a week.
Yup same, the two guys at work mentioned above both had YLOD about 6 months ago, one was sent away, the other repaired at home. The former failed again within about 2 months and the latter was traded in so current state unknown.
Unless you like being able to play PS2 games without a second console, and can take care of your stuff, anyway.
I'm still running a 60gb PS3 fine - I bought it at launch, and it's never shown any signs of having a problem. Recently I had it running 24/7 for almost 2 months on GT5. So long as you keep it in a cool, well-ventilated area, stored on its side rather than flat, and make sure that dust doesn't build up around/inside it (I hoover mine once every couple of months), it'll be fine.

My 60gb failed back in september. It was 4 1/2 years old though and was bought in the US.
The motherboard had gone on it, i could have had it repaired but it was alot of cash and since i dont play any ps2 games, i bought a 320gb slimline instead.
I do miss the fat one though as i think it looks really cool. And i could stand it on it's end, so took up less space.

Same here, still got the same 60GB that I bought at launch. Not one thing has got wrong with it and if that continues, it won't be going anywhere any time soon. I do the same as you - have it on its side in a well-ventilated area. Don't know about you but its like a makeshift radiator when its been on for a while with the heat it chucks out.
