Choosing a Steering Wheel for GT5

So, after getting bored of using the pad for GT5, I've decided I want a steering wheel. I've narrowed it down to 3 choices, all by Logitech; DFGT, G25 or G27?

The main advantage of the G25/G27 over the DFGT is the clutch pedal, meaning I can use it with rFactor as well without any issues. But why is there such a price difference between the G25 and G27? The only difference I can see is the G27 has buttons on the wheel, surely there's something more which warrants the extra cost?

G25 is the old (discontinued) model hence it's cheaper than G27.

I prefer my fanatec

G27 doesn't have the sequential shifting option on the stick like the G25 does, the pedals can be adjusted a little and it has shift lights that light up on the steering wheel.

I've got a barely used G27 going, so drop me a PM if you're interested.

If adjusting the budget is possible definitely consider a Fanatec wheel, they are by far the best IMO.

Why with the steering wheel when you are accelerating in a straight line if you take your hands off the wheel does the car turn really hard and crash? Doesn't happen with the pad.

Where have you seen G25's a lot cheaper than a G27? I suspect what you've actually found is old adverts of long sold stock as it was discontinued over a year ago selling at little more than £100 (grr!) and then prices soared when everyone saw the price of the replacement G27 at nearly £300, and now they go on eBay for £150+ second hand.

I think play.com had the G27 for about £200 which isn't bad compared to the RRP but still a hefty investment.

Its a bit of a bug with the force feedback in GT5 (and Prologue) I think, mine only mildly oscillates to start with but will eventually get into a tank slapper if left to its own devices.

I have an old Driving Force Pro wheel from PS2 days.. not tried it yet with GT5.. Can anyone recommend a good wheelstand solution (sorry to hijack!)?

Either the Fanatec RennSport or the Wheel Stand Pro.

I don't know about GT5, but on GT4, and much more so on GT4 prologue, the force feedback on the wheel would, when no steering effort was applied - i.e. when on a straight - settle in to a vibration which felt a bit like driving with an unbalanced wheel. If you held the wheel, the car went in a more or less straight line but if you let go of the wheel the vibrations were strong enough to throw some steering lock on and the car would quickly be bounced into a massive tankslapper.

This was only obvious on racing cars. Road cars, even modified, did not do this.

Sounds like GT5 still does it.

A G27 is definitely worth the money if you have it. I have had mine since the new year and it is brilliant. For me at least, no changes to the controls were needed, just connect to the PS3 and the mains and off you go. The only issue for me is trying to catch a powerslide

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I am now in a house where I have space for something more than just the controller. I intend on using a bucket seat, and wheel and pedals set up as others have done.

What would be the best budget set of pedals and wheel? Ideally, I would like to keep it to under £100 and am willing to go second hand. All the threads I have seen are about a year old, so I reckon things have probably moved on a bit.

For budget wheels it's probably the same situation as it was a year ago - for new I think you're looking at either a Driving Force Pro (the old official GT4 wheel) or Driving Force GT (an updated Pro, with a few differences in buttons, but fundamentally the same), second-hand you may be able to find a G25 for sub-£100, but not necessarily.

Logitech are still the best for budget wheels.

In fact, looking at it - prices seem about the same for all of these wheels as they were when I purchased mine almost three years ago! I have a Driving Force Pro, I think it cost me £80~ new.

Ive seen G25s second hand under £100 recently, there was one in the For Sale section of BabyBMW.net for a while at £80 which didnt seem to get a huge amount of interest, might still be there
