PS3 slim vs. Xbox 360 250gb

Hi all, sorry if this is a repost, i'm sure its been done before but as always stated, the search facility is as crap as a crap thing.

So i have been tempted by one of these deals where you get a free console with a phone contract. I dont make loads of calls/texts and have no desire for a high end phone, so can essentially get a contract with a phone with all the minutes/texts i would need, plus one of the consoles above for £20 a month. It seems rude not to take them up on the offer.

I am pretty out of touch with modern consoles, so which one of these is the better bet? I can also get an xbox 4gb with games, but i assume the massive difference in memory means there is an advantage in getting the 250gb version.

Just be aware that's probably for 2 years meaning in the long run your paying £480 for a console, cheap phone and cheap contract.

It would almost certainly be cheaper to buy a cheap contract on it's own and a console on it's own.

But if your happy with the deal go for it! I'd choose the PS3 personally, I have one and it is the more modern machine of the 2 and is likely to remain current for longer. But the game library is better on the xbox.

ORLY. PS3 should have been out before the xbox but was delayed due to the bluray problems.

From a technology POV there both about even, most games that have a difference are better on the 360 (due to ease of coding).

360 has a better games library but the ps3 isnt light on games.

Both have ace media abilities, 360 has a better controller and better online experience but you pay extra for it (live gold).

I've played briefly with kinect too and its quite fun, better than wii.

PS3 has built in bluray player if thats of use.

Well not really... I need a phone and currently pay £15 a month for a sim only contract, i have no desire to switch to a pay as you go phone and much prefer the convenience of a contract.

The new contract would give me enough minutes and texts that i would never go over the limit. The contract is 24 months, so at £5 more a month, i'm essentially paying £120 for a console with a phone chucked in. £120 interest free over two years isn't bad in my book

Yes, its not much money though and its a much more integrated and slick experience, you get what you pay for.

Few other points though you can install linux on the PS3 and change its hard drive yourself - tho I'm still on a 20gig 360 as all my media is stored elsewhere and streamed.

You also have to buy a wireless nic for the 360, tho i'm not sure the new ones need it.

I have used xbox live on a mates xbox whilst i was at uni and it was great.

I wouldnt have a desire to put linux onto the console, and i thinkthe 250gb drive on the xbox would be enough.

Sorry to sound dumb, but whats a wireless nic?

ETA, most of my mates have xbox's, i hadnt really thought about that but could definatley swing it for online games!

Wireless NIC = wireless network connection, if you want it online it needs to either be physicaly plugged into your network via cat 5 network cable or via wireless network, the adapter for wireless is extra.

ah thanks Rob, a quick look at the xbox website and it seems the new ones have this built in, so no need to worry anyway

SOme quicky points -

- The new Xbox does have wireless built in, it's 'N' too so gives a bit more bandwidth for more HD capability streaming. It's also a lot quieter and uses less juice. I don't believe these have the old Red Ring of Death issue like the old version used to. (I had the old 360 before it got stolen . And mine did RROD after about 2.5 years)

- I don't think you can do Linux on PS3's anymore - I think it was locked out in a software update somewhere along the line. Some people were getting refunds on old machines IIRC claiming that it was a function they had paid for that had been lost.

The real answer to this question is - either get the machine that has the games you really want to play, or if you're into online, get the one your mates have.

In the same timeframe they've also added 3D Game and Blueray Support and more video codecs, so none of them are particularly lost imo.

I have both, and the PS3 sees most use. Add in features like iPlayer, 4oD and ITV player, 3D BluRay and such and it becomes the more compelling device. I also find the PS3 interface more user-friendly and logical. If you have a PSP (I have one of these too) you can use it for remote play on some games, as well as for watching films or playing music over the net when away from home - even if the PS3 is off... It remotely turns it on and off. Very slick.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I already have a blueray player, so wouldn't necessarily need the console for that.

I think im leaning towards the Xbox, purely because its what my mates have, and i remember loving online COD4 with mates when i was at uni
