PS3 - Do i wipe the dust off?

Well i've been given GT5 for christmas after going on about it for so long

But my PS3 has been sat gathering dust since March. In fact i think the last time it was online was even before then. So im absolutly dreading switching it on and signing in online. Should I just leave it? Or should I get it on and go through the painfull and enduring update session it's gonna need and then install GT5 on top of that?
