UT2004 - would it run on my PC?
Discussion
I'm thinking about getting Unreal 2004. Question is, like with any new PC game these days, would it run on my PC? Specs:
2.06GHZ AMD Athlon
Geforce NForce 5200 128MB (most probably the bottleneck)
512MB DDRAM
I didn't post other specs because their not really required. These specs will dictate the (most likely poor) performance I'd get.
I've played the demo (onslaught is silly amounts of fun I should add) and on the highest settings everything was smooth - no lag whatsoever.
What sort of performance would I get with highest settings in the full game? Should I set everything to medium to get decent performance (30 frames per second)?
I've read people saying with similar systems that the full game runs crap and the demo runs excellent on highest settings.
If this game is anything like Far Cry (which I don't own) it wouldn't run very well at all...
Oh yeah, and how is the editor like?
And why do product lifecycles have to be so short? Every 6 months, theres a new graphics card from Nvidia etc, and all the latest games jump on the bandwagon and utilise it ASAP. When I brought this PC (well when my dad did) it was very close to top spec but a few months down the line and the aging process was well underway. No wonder my dad doesn't like me playing games on the PC...

I run UT2k4 on my machine which is :
AMD 1.4Tbird,
512 PC133,
GF4 Ti4400 and
40gig 5k4 HDD's.
I run it at 1024*786, mid-high details on all and it runs well. The only time it dies is when I enter games with more than 20ish people in, but that could be my broadband dying as well.
www.play.com have the game for £22ish, but they "don't do" returns AFAIK.
The demo was a good indication of the speed on my machine (bar the load times which were solved with "pre-load player skins" option unticked).
As for the ageing process, I built the core machine back in 2001 and upgraded the g'card only, it runs all the latest games at 1024*768 nicely, runs all the programs I want and I can't actually see a noticable difference in speed between mine and a mates (mines a bit faster usually tho . It's all to do with the way they are set up, what they are running at the time, condition of the hardware and the like...

Yeah it seems like I'll buy the game. I've got a 512kbps connection but even on old games I get no lag in single player mode but online the game was very laggy. I suppose I'll stick to single player mode (which is plenty of fun if the demo is anything to go by!).
What's the editor like?
I'll buy this game after exams most likely. Exams would be the priority in my life not computer games.
Also, what would Far Cry run like on my system with medium settings? LOL.
Oh and I've got a 120gb hard drive with about 10gb used - PMSL.

I thought it was strange that I had problems playing games online on my 512kbps ADSL connection especially after how companies advertise how well games can be played online with a 512kbps connection. Ah well the problem will probably be solved with a little troubleshooting.
Looks like I'll get the game sometime.

It'll run ok,
If you are on XP then kill some of the services that are no longer required, such as telephony, autoupdate etc, you can find these in the admin services panel. BLKviper has some usefull info on his website (blkviper.com I think) reference which services can be shut off without harming the O/S, gives UT a bit more headroom.
