OK, so this is the first GT game I've played properly (previous being a brief dabble with GT4, then GT5:Prologue and GT on the PSP), but I'm sure I must be doing something wrong, because my experience so far would be to say the game was crap.

1. Is this really the menu system? Does it have to be that confusing? With a loading screen between each option? Really?
2. Is B-Spec really an entire game where you have to watch the computer racing?
3. Graphics - really any better than GT4? Don't seem as good as Forza 3 or F1 2010 in my opinion. It's almost cartoony - a bit like GT Championship on the Wii.
4. Car physics. Why does my MX-5 power understeer? I've fiddled with all the settings I can find, but it just ploughs onwards if you give it throttle while steering.
5. Views. Can you really only have top, bonnet, and bumper cams? No interior view?
6. Car graphics - my MX-5 has an aerial, but no fuel filler. Lazy?
7. AI - why is it so easy? Where can I change it to be a bit more difficult?
8. Why so many variations of the same cars? Surely that's why you have tuning (not that I've explored that properly yet)?
9. No damage? Really? I thought this was finally going to be a GT game with damage? If Forza can do it, why not GT?
10. Why does every car sound the same? The Alfa V6 that overtook me in my Yaris sounded so similar I thought it was just my car getting louder for some reason. Impossible to differentiate.

This is just my first impression, but I'm not sure I want to persevere to be honest. Is it really this bad? If so, why is it so hyped, so lauded? I really hope it's me doing something wrong, and not the game. Please help!

Gran Tourismo has always been like that.

Rubbish AI, Poor sounds and millions of near identical cars. It was fine on PS1 as it was a groundbreaking game, on PS2 it was fine but others had caught up... now though its just a joke. The in-built GT flaws have now been around for 14 years and still no change.

That right there is enough to make me sell my PS3 and go back to F3.
Not worth the wait in my eyes.

It seems so, I've had it on for less than an hour and it is already annoying me. The menu system is just awful

2. Is B-Spec really an entire game where you have to watch the computer racing?
I agree, I have no interest at all in watching some pixels pretend to race.

3. Graphics - really any better than GT4? Don't seem as good as Forza 3 or F1 2010 in my opinion. It's almost cartoony - a bit like GT Championship on the Wii.
The shadows are poor and the standard cars don't look that great. I also don't like the 2d scenery on some tracks

4. Car physics. Why does my MX-5 power understeer? I've fiddled with all the settings I can find, but it just ploughs onwards if you give it throttle while steering.

5. Views. Can you really only have top, bonnet, and bumper cams? No interior view?
On standard cars, yes frown

6. Car graphics - my MX-5 has an aerial, but no fuel filler. Lazy?
I wouldn't notice that level of detail hehe

7. AI - why is it so easy? Where can I change it to be a bit more difficult?
I'd like to know this as well

8. Why so many variations of the same cars? Surely that's why you have tuning (not that I've explored that properly yet)?
They didn't have enough time!!!! obviously

9. No damage? Really? I thought this was finally going to be a GT game with damage? If Forza can do it, why not GT?
I think it's supposed to unlock later, isn't it ?

10. Why does every car sound the same? The Alfa V6 that overtook me in my Yaris sounded so similar I thought it was just my car getting louder for some reason. Impossible to differentiate.
I'm not blown away by the sounds either, have you hit a wall yet. Or even another car ? the sound it makes is very strange. Like a bonging noise

This is just my first impression, but I'm not sure I want to persevere to be honest. Is it really this bad? If so, why is it so hyped, so lauded? I really hope it's me doing something wrong, and not the game. Please help!

As silly as it is, they both change as you advance in levels.

I don't see what's odd about the idea the the AI difficulty should start off easy and increase as you progress through the game?

Looks disapointing to me, wont be buying a ps3 for this based on this thread and other reviews.

It's worth finding somewhere to try it if you aren't sure. It is flawed, some of those issues are inherent, some will be fixed in time (shadows being worse than prologue for one), but it isn't rubbish by any means. All of the reviewers rightly praised the physics; as it says in the IGN review, you have a 10/10 sim in a 5/10 game. There is plenty of enjoyment to be found in it for some.

The leveling system has a purpose, whether it was the right way to do things or not I'm not yet sure, I am very disapointed that the licences have no use other than gaining some exp.. I'd like to think that at least a few of the major gripes, such as the damage or the AI being st (I don't think so personaly, the early opponents are just too cautious/slow), are fixed when you reach higher levels.

GT's are never that good, they are just ok.

Blame KY. He is single minded and that is no arrogance in the face of stuff from the NFS series (for looks/sounds), overall engagement on subject (Forza 3), and the sim qualities of stuff like rFactor or LFS.

He rested on his laurels.

Not all bad, the GT series has a lot going for it, but he needs to use the 'internet' features of the PS3 to improve GT5 imo.
He also needs to stop being single minded about what HE wants, because it's not what we actually want these days, and start realising he needs to deliver for people who don't like his st menu music, or seem to have all day to trudge through menus with 10s loading between each one!

Gah... I'll enjoy driving in it, but the bits between me actually driving in it are laced with pain!

Wont be buying a PS3 for this after feeling very unimpressed by it yesterday.

Loading times are seriously taking the piss
Menus are ugly and cluttered
The whole Premium and Standard cars is utter bs.
Too many great cars and marques are missing whilst we have way too many crappy old JDM bangers.
Graphics are stunning sometimes but pretty average alot of the time.
Track list is dull, seen them all before (TG track is ste anyway)
Some cars sound decent but most sound like hoovers.
AI is still stupid.

Handling is good but feels too smooth and "glassy" and its lightyears behind the pc stuff.

I do hope that they are listening to the feedback to make major improvements.
In the mean time, roll on Shift 2 smile

They are licensed to EA. And Polyphony/Sony couldn't be bothered to pay them for the licence.

Cheers for that, explains a few things.

Does say the driving physics is good though. I can't agree with that. Power understeer in an MX-5 (with no t/c etc. on)? I'll double check this morning, but I'm pretty sure the real car doesn't do that.

I really can't see much wrong with it to be honest, much better than Forza 3, well maybe apart from the sounds but even they're improved. As for the graphics not being as good as FM3 rofl
