When was the last time you stepped back nearly a decade?

I did today when my brother invited me round for dinner and he had his (my old) original Xbox sat on the coffee table. Anyone remember the excitement of bringing home your copy of Forza Motorsport? Its not the same to be sure! Really struggled with the handling of the cars, the sounds were terrible and the graphics were embarrasing!

What games have you revisited only to find your spectacles a little rose tinted?

None jade empire, KOTOR and Shenmue 2 will never be bad games, halo 1 and 2 also are perfect. Both GTA games are also 10 times better than the new installments (san andreas and vice city will never be improved)

The original Toca Touring cars on PS1, couldn't believe how poor the gfx were and to say you wouldn't have noticed !

I played that a few months ago. It wasn't the graphics that got me, it was the handling! Flick the left stick and the car just bombs round the corner, unless you're above some arbitrary magic number when it oversteers wildly instead. I used to be really good at it years back but it was so bad as to be unplayable.

The biggest consistent disappointments for me are the Spectrum/BBC era games. Elite and Manic Miner are still brill, but I had a go at Escape From Moonbase Alpha a while back and it was a joke. Trundle from one side of a room to the other at 4fps, blip...blip...blip, hang on a second, I've been killed, what was that?

Mind you, considering how far the state of the art has moved on, I'm amazed this doesn't happen more often. Monkey Island 2? Still brilliant. 19 years and I don't think there's been a better adventure game since. On a similar note, played Duke Nukem 3D recently? It's an excellent shooter. No quick time events, no bullet time, no finicky cover mechanic, no real story... just ridiculous pace and scriptwriting so far toward the ham and cheese end of the scale you'd be forgiven for thinking you were at the deli counter.

I can remember playing the beach landing and the game in general many years ago and thinking this is awesome.. (in SD)

recently picked up the new MOH and they have given the original game in with it free "upscaled" in HD.. i gave it 5 mins.. it was terrible.. we're so spoilt these days

Goldeneye on the N64, still so much fun. Also another vote for Halo 1+2 still being awesome.

Conflict Desert Storm, still have it and its backward compatible so can still play it on the 360, I thought it was the best FPS, and is still smooth and fun, although I can do the missions almost with my eyes shut now!

I think Id swap some of the plushness of the current generation of for a bit of the reliability of the older ones.

Moved house a while ago and found N64, Sega Saturn, PS1, PS2 and my original xbox. All of them worked. Obvioulsy seemd dated but they did work.

Im on 360 number 3 now and my second PS3 went tits up a few months ago.
