Year Long PS3 Loan

I've studiously ignored 3rd gen consoles as I've never been able to afford one.
Lucky for me my brother is buggering off to Canada for year and as an early Xmas present he's lent me his PS3 on a loaner for the year while he's away. He's barely had it himself too long and it comes with one game (BF2:BC) and one controller. I'm already getting the feeling I'm going to be wanting to buy one when he takes it back next summer (the old sturdy PS2 is never quite going to look the same again I fear). Especially the blue-ray bit.
As I know nothing of the PS3 world or games whats the advice on any must have's or must do's? GTV4 must be cheap now and the other half is already addicted to Little Big Planet (any other "girlie" games? this is an equal opportunities household!)
Is there anything I could get cheap to tide me over for a while? It's already online (wireless), anything else I should/need to do?
And before anyone says RTFM, I wasn't given one!

Get Black ops next week when it comes it if you get it on launch day you mite get it for around £25 and everyone will be online playing it so you can join in online.
Try looking on the playstation store and downloading games off there for your little one or you could try eyepet or ps3 move.

If you want to play online against PHers, a load of us are getting Black Ops when it comes out next week (Dan, are you getting it? I saw a clip of the zombies in the game and I thought of you 
). GTA is a bit serious but an incredible game. For racing, you could pick up F1, or wait until GT5 which is meant to be out over christmas.

Little big planet is a brilliant game for everyone. I recommend FIFA10 too, as IMO it's better than 11.
Definitely get Uncharted though, it's one of the best games I've played.

I do love the wireless/internet aspect of the console however the idea of downloads and updates can be a bit frustrating, it's a frigging console, not a PC. Should be plug, play and go.
