is it actually popular. tbh it looks s
t to me and nintendo keep advertising it to the older generation that seemed to miss the start of the gaming culture. seems to me its a bit like those hands free phone ear plug/clips you see middleaged folk using because they all think it looks cool , young and "hip to use...

dont want an xbox / ps3 as not as party / female orientated as the wii and happy with the pc as primary games machines.
wii is very loooow spec compared, but then again why would anyone use iphone / ds / psp etc when compared to an xbox or ps3 - I guess because they serve a particular purpose.
there are loads on here who have both who will be along in a moment to argue....

So yes, it's popular. Whether you like the style of play is another matter entirely, but there's no denying that it does simple, pick-up'n'play, casual multiplayer gaming exceedingly well.
Looking at those sales figures though, how many people have actually gone on to buy more games for it after the initial purchase, and how many are just sat there gathering dust after an initial burst of play.
Mine very rarely gets used, it's only when my nephew comes over that it gets turned on these days.

This. I've had consoles since the NES and it's the first console I've ever seen that anyone can pick up and understand. And that was the whole point of it, it's a completely different market to the X360/PS3.Silverbullet767 said:

Spot on.I'm a spastic in some ways and my 5 year-old daughter is apparently female. The Wi is simple and intuitive enough that we can actually play a computer game together. -Can't do painting/jigsaws/baking biscuits/watch SpongeBob for ever...
And its great for that. (And Sports Resort table tennis is pretty addictive)
PS3 and PC for other games as required.

This. Drinking games a plenty.
If you're thinking of it in comparison to the PS3 and the Xbox then you're doing it wrong. Not the same market.
As for the other spastic comments, will leave them where they belong.
When it came out it hit the spot. You plugged it in and played it on a TV that most people had. PAL out, great stuff. My CRT is very good at this. I appreciate HD TV's have a certain appeal but I do not need mega brilliant graphics to play a game. Obviously if you have a HD TV then you want to utilise it. It also plugs nice and neat into my surround sound. Very capable so far.
Then there is the way it operates. No leads trailing, and if the game designers have done their job well then they use the control system well. Call of Duty world at war for example is very good where as one of the other Call of Duty is a mare. One of the Resident Evils is superb and a few others where the use of the controller and nanchuck I think takes it streets ahead from a controller from the 70's. Something the other games consoles have just cottoned on. Missed the boat there didn't they.
But each to their own. I also like the Mario games, and the sports games. They are fun and enjoyable. If they could get S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on the Wii I think that game would be as good as it could get. Pity is it constrained by an antiquated control system.
