Getting PS3 online

Hi,

Probably a dim question this...

I've had a PS3 for a couple of years now, but have never bothered getting online with it. Now I'd like to though, but everytime I try to do anything it just tells me "ethernet cable not connected", or words to that effect.

How or what is an ethernet, and where do I connect it?! I'm wireless at home, and everything else gets on fine and dandy.

Go into the XMB, to the right there area bunch of settings, network settings is the one you need. You need to set it to use wifi to go online and that'll be about it! Create or sign in to a PSN account and away you go!

Someone that actually knows will give a more detailed answer I'm sure, but the PS3 is wireless so have a look through all the settings menus to see if you have to turn it on. An ethernet cable is the blue/red/yellow cable that has really thick phone style ends to it. It'll plug into the back of your ps3 and router and will only fit in the hole it is designed for, you normally have 4 on the back of the router and one on the PS3.

Another online question, could you get a ps3 or 360 online via a mobile broadband?

Don't think so - not unless you can somehow use your dongle as a hub.

If you're wanting to do online gaming it will be worth investing in a pair of these Solwise Ethernet over power adapters as PS3s have a habit of dropping off wireless connections and just generally fart arsing around dropping you out mid game etc. The ones I've linked to are the cheapest but these would be better

Yes mate, they're the ones I use. They're more than capable as at most the ps3 will need ~6mbps, less than 10% of the total throughput capability of the plugs

Sorry for the Hijack

As all of you seem to be very knowledgeable I have a question over my -NAT3 type.

I'm playing F1 2010 and in the online I can only Host. It seems a common PS3 problem in the forums but I'm guessing its because I'm NAT3 and I would need to be NAT2 to be able to join other races. This seems strange however as I can join the races with the PH boys when they invite me.

Am I missunderstanding. My NAT3 rating never affected me before and MW2 for example always worked fine, I only never ended up hosting which was fine by me.

EDIT: In case anyone is interested, I solved the above by giving the PS3 a static IP address and now its NAT1. All games now appear and I can join other races. I had to hardwire to avoid the connection dropping but appart from that its OK now.
