red screen error on my hardly used ps3..

i've had it almost 3 years. barely played, then saw F1 2010 and quickly powered her up. the screen has come on previously with some dvd's but turning it off and back on almost always resulted in the disc playing perfectly. i have done a search but have'nt been able to pick up a pistonheads thread. i suspect the advice will be to contact sony, but i'm sitting here with a night off and F1 2010 in it's box. help!
Have you tried to restore the system? Don't know if it will work but be warned it will delete all your data.
To enter safe mode
1. Press and hold the power button, you'll hear the first power on beep, continue to hold and you'll hear a second beep, again continue to hold and you'll then hear a third beep after which the ps3 will power off.
2. Once again press and hold the power button, again you'll hear the first power on beep, continue to hold and then you'll hear the second, continue to hold and this time you'll hear a quick double beep, at this point release the power button and you should get a message on the screen saying connect the controller using a usb cable.
Once you've done that you get a list of options one of which should be restore ps3 system.
