X-Box 360 overheating problem - Is it easy to prevent?

So, I'm off out at lunch time to pickup a used X-Box 360 for £70. It comes with 12 months warranty but after that period is over I'll be wide open to the overheating issue.

I've seen a few bolt-on extras that have extra fans etc. but do these really work?

Is there a tried and tested prefered orientation (horizontal or vertical) for the X-box to reduce the risk?

I have just fixed my xbox with a RROD kit from Ebay (£18) Took about an hour to fix and works great. For £70 I would go for it.
