Recommend me some old PC games

Right, I've recently ugraded my RAM to 3GB and my OS to windows 7 from the spec below.

Mainboard : Gigabyte M55S-S3
Chipset : nVidia nForce 550
Processor : AMD Athlon 64 3500+ @ 2200 MHz
Physical Memory : 1024 MB (2 x 512 DDR2-SDRAM )(Now + 2 x 1024 DDr2)
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
Hard Disk : ST3250620AS (250 GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D
Monitor Type : SONY SDM-HS75 - 17 inches
Operating System : Windows 7 ultimate

Mainly use my 360 for gaming and play foorty manager on the pc but looking to pick up a few older games that will run ok on this PC. Any gems I should think about? Will the old half-life games run on this?

Any ideas much appreciated!

There are too many to list but here are some which ran well for me back in the day.

Halflife 1 & 2
Counter Strike
Rainbow Six series
Unreal Tournament
Quake series
Command & Conquer
Postal


These should run okay but you may need to tweak the settings..

Grand Prix Legends for the ultimate serious racing sim. Will run great on that system.

Thanks for those guys, particularly looking forward to Grand Prix Legends and Postal sounds fun. Think I'll pick up the orange box, £15 for HL 1&2, Portal and Team Fortress 2, sounds good to me!

Battlefield 2 should run nicely and you'll be able to play well with some practice.

Deus Ex and Deus Ex Invisible War. The first is fantastic and the second isn't nearly half as bad as people will have you believe!

7600GT isn't too bad, anything prior to 2007 should run fine, you may even be able to run some of the more modern stuff on minimal detail.

When you said "old games" I was expecting you to have a Win98 laptop, I thought I'd have to recommend games like Theme Hospital

I think any games pre 2005 will be able to run at full whack on that machine, not sure what games you like but these are a few of my personal favourites -

Rome: Total War
Dawn of War
Age of Empires II
X-beyond the Frontier

And a couple of personal gems no-one else would have heard of -
Soldiers of Anarchy
Ground Control

I have this for the 360. Defintely worth it if you're a fan of 1st person shooters, decent storyline too (If you've followed the first HL)

Counterstrike. All you need. I see youtube vids of these playstation games, and they just seem too trivial - the accurqacy you need with a mouse is immence on counterstrike, when you're playing against a 12 year old who still moves at twice the speed of sound.

CART precision racing is a crap game, but brilliant sim if you use with a good force feedback wheel.

X Wing alliance is almost as good as the earlier Tie Fighter and XvT, but will run on Windows ME. I guess it'll run on 7 / vista as well. Tie fighter and X wing vs Tie figher won't run on my ME system. You need a good joystick, I got a Cyborg 3D off ebay for 12 quid. Still a mint game.

If you can deal with crappy graphics...

Total Annihilation - best real time strategy I have played. Also Command and Conquer (the old ones, the first one and Red Alert). I found Tiberium Sun / dawn (C+C2) frustratingly less good than the older ones.

I had a similar spec computer in my iMac (Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz, nVidia 7600GT) and I could only run games like Left 4 Dead 2 and Unreal Tournament 3 in Lego-vision (oddly, L4D 1 ran just fine) if I wanted anything resembling a playable frame rate.

Half Life series - all of them, can get them pretty cheap on Steam I would imagine...
Worms games are good for some light hearted fun
Theme Hospital, already mentioned but a game I go back to time and time again
Dungeon Keeper is an old favourite - never really rated number 2 though.
Monkey Island series is fantastic, proper old school point and click adventure
Grim Fandango is another goodun by Lucas Arts
