Modern Warfare type games on the PC

Mt Brother-in-law has got me hooked on playing Modern Warfare online on his X-Box. Sadly I can only play this on the few occasions we visit his place as I dont have an X-Box.
I'm not really one for computer games so buying a console for just one game is a little pointless, however I'm looking to buy a new PC soon so I was wondering..... Are games like Modern Warfare available on the PC? Of so, is the online gameplay similar to what you find on the X-Box?
Also, what kind of spec do I need as a minimum to run the game on a similar level to the X-Box in terms of graphics etc.? Game playing wont be the main purpose of the PC - I use it for a bit of CAD work etc.
Oh, can you get an X-Box style controler thing for a PC?
Could I get a good enough spec laptop to run the game?

In response to the xbox controller question I am led to believe you can use an actual xbox controller with a pc. I'm not sure how but allegedly you can.
There is a new Call of Duty coming out soon, you'll probably end up with that aswell

IMO Console gaming has 1 huge advantage over PC...ease of use. With PC games you need to fiddle with settings left right and centre to get the frame rate right etc etc. With a console it's just plug and play.
However in response to the specific question - yes you can use a Console type controller and there are loads of similar games, check out Steam for ideas:

ultimately most PC games will run on a fairly poor PC with their settings all at a minimum, unfortunately... You'll soon get annoyed if you're using a bog standard machine as the lack of detail, refresh rates, textures will give you a distinct disadvantage when it comes to spotting your opponents hiding in the terrain.

PC games are much better in general than console games with more variety. Yes. they are not quite as plug and play as a console but you get what you pay for.
FPS gaming on a PC = mouse and keyboard, much better than a pad.
If you do get a gaming PC you will need lots of memory and a good graphics card (DO NOT buy an integrated card under any circumstances) a good graphics card that makes games play well will be at least as expensive as a basic console package, but easier to get past the wife!

My two children 9 and 12 use their bedroom PC's for gaming. They often don't like going round friends houses with playstations or xboxes because the graphics are 'juddery and look bitty'.
The keyboard and mouse are vast improvements over an xbox controller. We bought two usb xbox type contollers for the PC's, and after a few days of the novelty wearing off they went back to using the keyboard and mouse.
Although the xbox and playstation are good, I would think almost any recent Nvidia or ATI graphics card added to any computer from the last three years would run rings around the consoles.
Add to that the fact that paying games is only a very small fraction of what a computer can do for a growing mind and it really became no contest in our house.
Its now a little out of control with five networked computers in the house and a house server to host most multiplayer games, plus a teamspeak server which is used as a giant free speak server for any of their friends with a headset and mike. As they are almost constantly talking to their friends its saving a fortune on calls, and has the advantage of being able to replace in game multiplayers where they could be talking to anyone.

and you can use a wirelss xbox pad with your PC, or just buy a wired xbox pad and plug it into a spare USB port on your PC, both work great.
for modern warfare style games check out Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare (G.R.A.W) a couple of years old now so should be cheap to pick up and less demanding on the hardware front.

Honestly, as per my previous post, why would you buy a game less demanding for the PC.
The Xbox is a basically a PC of a generation you haven't been able to buy for the last couple of years at least.

please read the specs on the xbox. Its a P3 coppermine linked to a very old generation Nvidia card. At its launch it was a bit faster than the equivalent spec PC due to its integrated video card processor bandwidth, but its complete pants now.
The only advantage I can see is that as a console, there's less chance of an operator messing with the architecture, its more stable than the equivalent PC.
But there isn't any point in buying a less demanding game unless your PC is about five years old, is there?

i think mw2 is available on the pc, however they are so addictive that only really having one game for you console is a money saver and no cause for concern! 
ive had my ps3 since just before mw2 was launched. the 3 games that came packaged with it [KillZone 2 etc] have not been played since mw2 arrived in the post julian64 said:

could be down to most pc monitors are smaller? > where xbox/ps3's are generally played on bigger screens, so tend to look a bit worse. i know any new pc will have better graphics, but frankly the ps3/360 via HDMI is superb and i dont think either could be described as having bitty graphics.
Gears of War 2 on the 360 is mindblowingly good.. likewise KZ2 on the ps3 is really good.
if a mouse is wanted you can always pick up a XIM2 (for the Xbox 360).. bit pricey from what i hear but will probably give you an advantage over controller players and all from the comfort of your sofa, rather than sat upright getting square eyes from the pc monitor 12" infront of you .. where better is there to relax and play a game than reclined with your feet up infront of the big screen?!
- just my personal preference. Ive got a quad core 8gb ram HomeTheatrePC for the gamesroom [where the ps3/xbox elite are also sat connected to a 50" plasma] but have no intention of ever installing a game onto it.. although im sure i'd probably enjoy the graphics improvement.. (on the flip side id probably be p*ssd when headshotted from 5miles away by some guy with the latest bit of kit from alienware allowing him to differentiate my 1 pixel head from the tree behind me).. at least consoles provide an even platform.. well unless you buy a XIM mouse thingy!
