Thinking about my quest to find a game which equals the old classic Elite, I was thinking that there are very few games which can stand the test of time, and remain good regardless of technology.

What other games do people rate as being all-time greats?

I'd have to say that Doom, Pacman and Elite would be high on my list.

War. It's never been so much fun.
War. It's never been so much fun.
Come to your brother.
Kill him with your gun.
Leave him lying in his uniform, dying in the sun.
War. It's never been so much fun.

From memory as well.

[anorak mode]Yes, I rememeber back when we had 4 colours on the computer and where damned happy to have them [/anorak mode]

Where are all the games that you can sit down to play and when you get up, a week or so has passed and you have grown a full beard?

Another one that took weeks of my life! Command and Conquer.

I agree about Privateer, but surely it's just a more modern version of Elite? Great game though, and hopefully X2 will be as good if not better.

My all time greats are:

FPS - Doom

Strategy - Age of Empires II (AoE 1 got annoying)

Flight Sim - X-Beyond the Frontier (the forerunner to X2: The Threat)

Driving - Stunt Racer 2000 (no you haven't heard of it)

RPG - can't really say, don't really play them.

Arcadey thing - MDK

I currently have Metal Slug, Garou Mark of the Wolves, Magic Drop 3 and the legendary Last Blade 2 in my gen-u-ine Neo Geo arcade cabinet. Also legendary for it is Baseball Stars Pro 2.

Nothing is more fun at a party than the Neo Geo.

Though I should make the guests pop coins in, just to pay for the beer

For the consoles, PGR2 is one of my all time favs. Halo is incredible.

Super Mario Brothers is an all timer. As was NHL 95 for the Genesis. Rygar was silly...a friend of mine and I played it through in one siting...about 18 hours worth.

But without a doubt the deepest, most robust game ever is "Fire Pro Wrestling S 6 Man Scramble" for the Sega Saturn. Japan only game, you need a converter, and a rather thick translated manual.
