I was wondering if there was a decent modern version of Elite around these days - i.e., trading mixed in with space travel and shooting up bad guys, plus all the other cool stuff that was Elite.

I've seen a game called "X2: The Threat", but the reviews don't appear to be that great. Can anyone suggest any alternatives?

If don't mind your life disappearing, take a look at Eve Online

It's a massively multiplayer online Elite-like game, gorgeous graphics and a huge galaxy to explore. Played it for a while when it first came out but it sucked up too much time, so it had to go

You can download the game for 19.99 euros, which includes the first 30 days subscription.

Well, it will keep you from spending too much time on Pistonheads if nothing else

Looking at the website again, I'm toying with the idea of putting Star Wars Galaxies on hold and firing up my Eve account again...

Update: just reactivated my account

Hmmm, PC Zone gave it 92% so it can't be all that bad. Their conclusion was:

Some might try to tell you that it isn't that great. Some may cry: "Too slow!" and "Where's the action?" These people are simply showing the depths of their ignorance. X2: The Threat is one of the few examples of intelligent gaming left out there. If you want to waste your brain cells on pointless shooters and dumbed-down platformers, that's up to you.

There's a downloadable demo of X2 available from 3D Gamers if you want to give it a go.

Be warned.

Played Freelancer on the Jolt server last night.

They've turned the difficulty up. It's *rock* hard now. I'm running the biggest, toughest freighter in the game and I'm having to dock for repairs every jump point.

X2 looks good. Not tried it yet.

I've got X2:The Threat.

Best.
Game.
Ever.

If you're like me anyway. If you want a slow buildup of your empire through trading, building stations, etc. then X2 is the game for you, but if you want all action then you're better off with Freelancer.
The fighting in X2 is great fun, but it takes a while to get a ship good enough to take on anything.

So if you had to choose between Freelancer and X2, which would win on being most Elite-like?

X2, although the interface is a little clunky the game itself is very rewarding. As Nige says, it takes a long time to build up but reading some of the online tutorials reaps benefits.

Just ordered X2

I'll also try out Eve-online as well, so don't expect to see me for a few days!

I avoided Eve for precisely that reason.

Is X2 online play as well?

If anyone wants to try Eve Online, contact me through my profile - there is a 'buddy' system where you can sign your mates up for a free 3-day demo.

It doesn't appear to be, but according to their website, it looks like this option is planned for later in the year!

Independance Wars : Edge of Chaos is a couple of years old now, but was and stil is a superb game. It pretty much follows Elite, but has missions to complete as well. It isn't opened ended in the sense that there are missions, but it's more like GTA than Mafia (i.e. you can you fly off and do your own thing, but ultimately you have to return).

It's huge, I never managed to complete it and it destroyed my joystick (cheapo one), never did get round to buying a newer, better one.

It's been planned for a few years now... Egosoft are superb games designers though* - they actually listen to reccomendations on the forums and put them in the game (one of my ideas got into X-Tension which was like X1.5).

I don't know what it'll be like online to be honest - if you join at the start when everyone is quite small it'll be fine, but for a new player starting out after a few weeks I can forsee their factories getting nuked as soon sa they're built. SETA won't exist either which would mean long periods of time waiting to cross a sector. Don't know how they're going to work it.

*if you ignore the bugs.
