I've been playing about with some good emulators lately, e.g. Megadrive (finally gonna complete Road Rash)

They work really well on the Windows desktop, as a window that you can hide behind work etc

Got me thinking: it's difficult to run 'legacy' PC games in DOS mode on XP, so has anyone made a 'legacy' PC emulator that sorts out stuff like Sound card IRQs etc and lets me play classic PC games on a Windows desktop?

There's this thing:

VDM Sound

It provides a sound interface for a DOS box running under Windows XP etc

I've found a PC emulator!

It's called BOCHS and requires a little PC knowledge to get it up and running. It's GPL software with a Windows port so you can run Windows on Windows if you want to

You can set up image files as floppy and hard discs and even use network cards.

http://bochs.sourceforge.com

The Megadrive emulator (and many others) is at www.zophar.net/genesis.html
(I use Kega, it's got everything)

at the ROMs (remember, you shouldn't download them unless you own the original game!)
www.edgeemu.com/
(need to register, and get a popup blocker)

Anyone tried MAME? It emulates hundreds of old arcade machines, so you can play all the old arcade classics as they were. Amazing.

I also got hold of an N64 emulator and played Goldeneye, runs quite well. I even have a USB converter that lets you use N64 and Playstation joypads on your PC! Crazy!

Oh wow, I downloaded Gen, a MegaDrive/Genesis generator, and am currently trying not to die on Sonic 2. Haven't had this much fun for a while
