Fixing PS3 flashing red light?

Well, my PS3 stopped working (fat 60Gb box). Looking on the net, it seems it is common, but every google hit, apart from forums which talks about the problem, is for someone trying to flog of a repair guide.
Can someone point me in the right (free) direction, for the right information to do it myself?

Smack mate, The red means that it is overheating. So leave it for a few hours before jumping to conclusions. But if not it is £130 for sony to fix it. Or I know people that fix them for £40. But obviously you are a long way away from me so I'm sure you will find someone more local?
There may be fixes on youtube? I'll have a look for you later if you are struggling?

Sounds exactly the same as mine then pal. Sony said it was over-heating, But it had only been on for around 15 minutes anyway. That's what confused me. I left it off over-night(and pulled the plug out the wall)

Sounds bad news then. you could try this trick to get the disc out:-
Keep flicking the power on and off at the back whilst pressing the eject button every second or so.
Or try with the ps3 off at the back, Hold the eject button for 15 seconds then turn the power on at the back. That's what I was told, Although none of them worked, they did work for my cousins when his broke

So did you have to get yours "reflowed"? How long ago?
. But was out of Warranty and had to pay. Not sure what you mean by reflowed though, I didn't touch mine as Sony said if I did they wouldn't if I needed their help.

They no longer qualify for warranty work.
They will still repait one if you pay them. However some sony employees are confused by this and refuse to take one in that's been opened. A few phone calls to the repair line and they'll sort it.
The console sounds like it is overheating. This means that the contact between processor and heatsink has become unstable and as such the heatsink isn't able to leech the heat out of the chip effectively and leads to rapid overheating. This also explains why a ps3 can feel cool on the outside but flashing red!

The thermal compound doesn't look like it had very good contact on the middle chip, and had dried out.Once it died yesterday, every time I tried to start it resulted in 3 beeps after about 2-3 seconds, and the flashing red light.

Exactly same as mine, It is possible to fix though, As I know people that can do them. I wouldn't like to do it myself though, As I'm more at home with a calculator, But If your even half technically minded it shouldn't be a problem apparently.I had mine repaired by these guys: http://esalesinc.co.uk/ps3repair/index.html because it was a quick, while-you-wait job (if you're in London)
Be aware though that when they say "Not only do we repair this problem, we perform custom upgrades to ensure it does not come back", they mean it comes back with a fan as loud as an original xbox 360. But the overheating problem hasn't recurred

Ordered some Artic Silver thermal compound on Tuesday, waiting for the postie to deliver it. And I am going to try the reflow fix everyone the PS3 experts on the net talk about.I did notice a few glitches with the video in the last few weeks, so that could have been the start of it all.
