I'm struggling to get off the line quickly in Forza 3. It doesn't help that instead of having time to adjust revs, I have to watch a silly cutscene of my car revving itself, before being given all of 3 seconds to launch. But still I've tried a few different techniques and not had much success, especially in anything with more than 300bhp and TCS off. I've tried just nailing it and trying to control the wheelspin. I've also tried holding revs at about 4-5k and it seems to bog down before slowly driving off. I have also tried using 2nd gear in more powerful cars which just seems to slip the clutch.

I'm using a controller not a wheel btw.

Any input on this? I guess car setup could be a factor - I never bother changing anything except ride height so my car looks good.

Infact while I'm asking - any general driving tips? I try to be as smooth as possible but sometimes I still get caught out in more powerful cars. I find other people are leaving me for dead in long sweeping corners where I'd like to just apply full throttle but can't because it'll just spin me out. I end up at a crawling pace unless I turn on TCS. I always have stability control off though, perhaps I should turn it on? I feel kinda like it's cheating though, I do want a challenge

To be honest it sounds like most of your problems are probably related to the ride-height.
Lowering it by a lot would give effects of all that you have described.

I presume you're struggling to launch FWD or RWD cars as well...? Typically bring the revs upto around peak torque so there's initial wheelspin to prevent the transmission bogging down and then apply the power (gradually depending on the power) once the car is moving forwards at some pace. smile

My first and main bit of advice to anyone playing Forza: get a wheel and pedal set. It makes the game a quadrillion times better.
As for launching, it's tricky in RWD cars with no TCS, but I generally experiment a few times with each car, holding it at different revs and trying to find the point where wheelspin is at a minimum.
Tunes make quite a lot of difference to the cars' performances. I'm crap at it myself, but picking highly rated ones from the storefront usually makes a world of difference to handling.

I tend to keep the throttle pinned at the start and then once the car starts to move I control the throttle to make sure the transistion from Wheel spin to forward motion is as smooth a possible.

Oh and in reference to Phill T, a wheel can make a difference to some people, but I feel the only real diff between controller and wheel is long equal readius corners where the wheel user can take a smooth line whereas a controller user takes a jagged-ish line, hence loosing a bit of speed.

I seem to get quite good starts in most races, at least good enough for a few PHers to swear at me biggrin

I enjoy drifting on Forza 3 (where it's a little less beneficial to knock someone off the track). So I guess I'm slightly more aware of how much grip the tires have when they're slipping...?

I also use manual with clutch...

As for setups... I tend to have my front suspension softer than the rear giving it a fairly even squat under acceleration, perhaps this more neutral base provides my advantage?

(waits for someone to say "OMG, 4WD GIVES BESST ACCELERASION DUH!!")

True, it's particularly useful for corners, but mostly it's just a lot more fun. Especially when applying gratuitous dabs of oppo. driving

Well not all my cars are slammed but some of them are. I've had problems in standard cars that have big power.

FWD cars don't seem quite as difficult to launch but then I don't have any really powerful FWD cars to worry about. I think the most powerful was a Civic with about 280bhp and that got off the line without too many problems.

It just seems like the AI are able to move off the line with no wheelspin whatsoever, which doesn't matter because I'll overtake them, I'm just jealous. Also some of the drag racing events are getting harder and harder to win

1) Dump Throttle
2) Immediately hit 2nd
3) Change back down to 1st and your away.

WARNING..... Use this method with care at stage 3 as changing down twice results in reverse and a very pissed off racer from behind your grid position!

Rwd car with moderate power :
3/4 revs, get the car moving 20mph maybe, quickly back off, stops the wheel spin then nail it.

Rwd car with lots of power :
As above, to 20mph or so, change to 2nd and just feather the throttle...erm..stick?

Thats because the AI use TC. This is more obvious in the higher powered R class cars where they get a steaming start with the tell-tail on off black lines at the start and amazing corner exit speeds because they're not lighting up the rears with a breath of throttle. Unfortunatly this can't be turned off. Boo Hiss turn 10.

I'm not that hot on the set up, usually what I do is loosen the rear ARB right down to reduce the tendancy to snap oversteer. Makes a big difference with my driving style.

Get a diff on it.

And lower the acceleration setting. This will reduce oversteer, but will also reduce acceleration if the setting is too low.

hehe

I don't know really, whenever I can be bothered to turn the 360 back on! No idea why I haven't been on it, just haven't had the urge!
Hmmm maybe tonight...!
