PS3 Not recognising disc

Bugger. Am re-formatting the sodding thing to see if that works, otherwise looks like may have to get it repaired. Anyone else had this issue?

Obvious thing but have you tried cleaning the disc?

I had the same thing happen to me on Christmas Day last year! Console (launch model 60gb) wouldn't read any discs - Blu-Ray, DVD, or CD, everything else was fine, downloaded games from PSN worked OK. If this is the same symptoms as you are having, I reckon the laser unit has gone. I bought a new laser and deck assembly from EBay (EBay ID Softpea) for £43.99 delivered from Hong Kong, took about an hour to fit and all has been OK since. I have been testing it quite a bit lately with Final Fantasy XIII, 28 hours in and the drive is still behaving itself. Might be worth having a bash, if you don't mind taking things apart, although you need a Torx T10 Security bit (with the hole in the end) to get the lid off the PS3 (I got one of these for £2.99 from EBay)

Same thing happened to me with my 60gb, i'm not too handy however and so just bit the bullet and sent it back to Sony, for £99 they do it all for you, and arrange for a courier to drop it off at an exact time you're home, which was convenient for me.

I had this happen to my first ps3 a month or two from new... Sent it back to Sony for a swap...

If it's out of warranty, fix it yourself, or get a mate/independant shop to do it for you... Or you could trade it in for a slim...

This happened to my first one, a month or two from new. Sony arranged a swap for a new unit within 24 hrs. But this time it was well out of warranty, so decided to have a bash at fixing it. I've always been into modding consoles, so swapping out the internals of the BluRay drive didn't seem like a scary proposal, and it isn't! Just take your time and remember where all the screws/cables go and it couldn't be simpler, plenty of guides on the net too.

Cheers for the advice. Sounds like it's the laser unit (a few similar stories on google!) Is well out of warranty, so may give fixing it myself a go, if all else fails then will prob stump up for an xbox as don't think it's worth the £100 odd that Sony may want.
