New HDTV xbox to TV problems!

I've got a new 42 LCD TV 1080p (see pic) and have been trying to change the xbox settings to 1080p so I flip the switch on the back of the xbox for HDTV (as it sais to do in the xbox display settings) and it re-boots but no picture appears, I can hear the xbox has loaded but have no control. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

How are you connecting your xbox to the TV? Are you using HDMI, component(5 separate connections), VGA, SCART or composite?
In order to get HD resolutions on your TV you need to use HDMI, component or VGA and select the correct input on your TV.
I have an LG LH3000 (I see your TV is an LG too), I have no problem setting 1080P using component (haven't tried the others) Also make sure you set the aspect ratio of the TV to 'just-scan' to prevent any overscan which would lose you the super-sharp 1:1 pixels.

I've got the HDMI & that red light connector thingy but they're plugged into the tv from the amp, currently got the xbox linked via a scart but it does have an extra 3 plugs attached to it a green, blue & red cable.
The HDMI cable's plastic housing doesn't fit into the xboxs plug for some reason.

Phil, connect the TV to the xbox using an HMDI cable. Your TV 'may' only accept DVi-i, though i doubt it. So you need to get a HDMI to DVi converter plug (i got this) .

This is the exact set up i have. Only issue is you need to change the TV to the correct channel - the amp should automatically start on the correcty audio - i think.

To me it sounds like your only connecting to your TV in standard definition, with the HDMI lead going to the amp, you'll only get sound.
So when you switch it to HD on the xbox settings you wont get a picture because you have only connected the yellow lead (SD) to your TV
You cant use the component HD lead and the HDMI lead at the same time. That's why the HDMI wont plug into the Xbox.
Do this....
Use Component HD lead (red, green, blue video, red, white audio)
Connect red,green,blue phonos to your TV (this can handle 1080p fine) (its seperated into 2 sets of 3 cables, the other side is red/white/yellow)
Connect the red/white to your amp input but not the yellow cable, just leave that dangling.
Then connect another set of red/white from your amp's output to the TV, these should connect right next to the red/green/blue earlier.
OR
Connect the HDMI lead from the Xbox to the TV directly.
then connect red/white phono's from the TV's output (or you can use the headphone socket 3.5mm jack to 2 phono's) to the amp's input.
ETA: your TV may have an optical out, known as TOSLINK, little 4mm square connector with red light coming out of it.
If this is the case, use either the HD component lead or HDMI lead from the Xbox to the TV, and use an optical lead from the TV to the amp.
EATA: This had the added bonus of any sound output your TV makes will be passed to your amp... Wii, PS3, sky, porn etc....
