Well, after getting an E74 and sending my xbox to the xbox doctor, it has now been returned all working again. Not entirely happy as the little cover over the USB ports is missing, but at least the thing works. I have since purchased a new cover from fleabay for the princely sum of £9.

It was an Elite console, about 2 years old, there was no argument about warranty, and it took about a week to get it back. Oh and they sent me a 1 month xbox live pass too. If I put the code in now, will it just add the month to my usual subscription or do I need to wait until I am getting near the end?

Now let's see how quickly I can kill it with MW2 again...

Yes it will just add the month onto your existing subscription.

£9 for a usb cover? I'd have a left it off!

It was the whole front cover I ordered - I am a sucker for the carbon fibre look, and the gaping hole with a white sticker showing was playing havoc with my OCD.

What is worrying is that the first thing I did with the xbox when I got it back up and running was install Fallout 3 to the HDD...

NO chance of spending 3 days with it though, SWMBO and my daughter will have other plans.

Was E74 RROD? if not did they charge to fix the console?

As far as I know E74 is now also covered by the extended warranty

It wasn't the RROD, Just one part of the circle went red. However when I booted the console up I got an error message displayed with E74 and got no further

E74 is a 'general hardware failure'.

It didn't used to be covered by the extended warranty, but this policy changed a while back so now it falls under the same category as RROD. The returns process is prety easy, you just register the consol with xbox support and then book the warranty claim. They send you an e-mail with a link to a UPS returns slip, you print it off and arrange for pickup. I couldn't get the online booking thing to work without it wanting me to pay, so I phoned up instead and they booked in about 30 seconds.

Console returned about a week later. Which is good going, especially since it went to Germany.

Two questions!!!
My 360 just rrod'd, done the online xbox repair, M$ sent me a email to print out a UPS return label for sending to Germany.

Do I need to provide a box to send it back? or is it just the Americans who get the UPS delivered empty box.
Do I need to attach my address inside the box for return?

Once I've worked out the above two questions, I guess I can either try to book an online collection or as you said ring UPS up.

Hi 69 Coupe

You have to provide your own box I'm afraid, and pack it really well as it won't be marked as an xbox and could get thrown about on the back of the van. They say that you shouldn't send it in the original xbox box for obvious reasons. Don't forget to take all the bits off it, like the HDD, custom faceplate, and of course any games in the disc tray...

I put my preferred return address inside and on the slip for safety, however they still sent it to my home address as per my registration details even though I asked them to send it to my work where they picked it up from.

Once the thing is picked up, it's a painless process, I can't fault how quickly they got it back to me.

Good! Sent mine off (or delivered it to a UPS collection point) on Sat, so looking forward to it coming back!

I concur with the process I've seen so far, I had to print out the label (and I put the receipt in the box too), in fact box isn't really the right descriptin - they ask you not to use your Xbox one, so I made a sturdy package out of a couple of other boxes, some newspaper and a hundreadweight of selotape.

Getting the label emailed to me was a 5 minute job on the internet. 1 hour for the instruction email to boomerang back and about 6 hours (next morning) for the label email.

I'll let you know if it comes back!!

PS - think it's been said already, but E74 and RROD (3 lights, not 4 (cable unplugged) or 2 (overheat condition - will be okay when allowed to cool) are both covered under extended warranty, i.e. 3 years.

PPS - If you are sending it off - make sure you include NOTHING other than the box itself, keep hold of your PSU, wireless adaptor and HDD, and or any fancy covers you have on it.

Was just sorting mine out to send back tomorrow. Glad i saw your post. I was going to use the original XBOX packaging wrapped in brown paper.

SO had a look at the instructions

XBOX Email said:
Use a sturdy package that is well padded to help protect the contents during the shipping process. The service centre will return the repaired or replaced components to you in our own packaging.
Fair enough but then it says

XBOX Email said:
Do not use your original Xbox or Xbox 360 packaging to send your console to our Service Centre, as it will not be returned.
This is silly, as a normal box will not be optimal for sending the xbox back, whereas the original xbox will be. What difference will it make?

So now after spending £82.60 to get the repair because my xbox will not display anything let alone a e74 error, I have to go and buy a box to put the sodding thing in.

Originally they sent a box to you to pack it in. Then they collected that and returned the xbox back to you in that box.

They say don't send your original box in because it won't be returned to you - not because it's not good enough. I'm sure you can use the original box, it's just that you won't get it back.

I used a box that we'd received some wine in, was perfect. Have a look in your supermarket, they often have those at the counter.

Thanks Skoff, and others for additional info.
I'm quite suprised that M$ is doing the repair for free as my Xbox is one of the first batch, circa early 2006, this will be its first repair.

Bit Worried about my Xbox. i paid the £81.6 for the repair, got all the details and packing label. Sent it off yesterday and checked the site just now o see if they have received it.

The MS Site says that no repair pending. frown

Hopefully this will change soon....otherwise this repair will cost £81 plus a new xbox

If you got the repair label sent you should also have a ref number for the repair, it prints on the label. put that number into thte system and it should show up, otherwise I'd send the number to xbox support to see what they have to say.

Hmm, definitely get in touch with them then. It might be that the system isn't up to date yet, but definitely not worth risking. You should also have some sort of come back with UPS if they picked up the package. I wouldn't be too concerned as you do have a paper trail. Also if you paid by credit card you probably have some sort of protection there.

Fingers crossed for you.

Just checked my xbox repair status, arrived in Germany, and now on its way back the same day it arrived.
As mine xbox360 is circa 2006 without HDMI, I'm surprised that I got a free repair can't complain.

I wonder if they will send me a new xbox, no way they could repair same day with all the boxes that must end up in that depot.

You don't get a new one, you get a reconditioned unit back, that someone else sent in. When yours is fixed it will go to someone else.
