Unlucky Rocky.

Yes it has happened to a few people more than once.

I think that MS charge £95 to repair the machine. So IMO it is worth trying the X-Clamp replacement kit that on ebay for no much. And then when that fails buy a new arcade which are around £100 now.

Hmm, Does the Microsoft website definitely say it's out of warranty? or are you assuming because it's over a year old? I thought my warranty was way past it but Microsoft still repaired (read 'sent me a brand new one') well after my end of what I thought my warranty date was.

put the serial number into the MS support part of Xbox.com
and check weather it is still covered for 3 red lights...they extended the cover for THAT specific fault

I've had it twice, once within 5 minutes of taking it out of the box.

Numerous times with numerous Xbox's. Incidently, is it stood on its side or laid flat?

Fixed two Xboxs with the X-Clamp repair, it's too easy compared to dealing with MS!

dealing with MS has always been very easy for me. no dramas or fuss

please tell me about the X-Clamp repair though because next time mine goes belly-up it will be out of warranty

Check that it actually is out of warranty on the website first, as MS offer a 3 year warranty for the RROD, and I think it's something like a year from your last repair.

If it is, I think it's about £80 to repair.

I've found MS customer support useless, moreso with the Engrish speaking call centres!

The X-Clamp repair is pretty simple, it's more a case of whipping the front plate off and the rest of the case seems to be pretty much made with quick release clips. Both the X-Box's I've fixed so far were out of warranty, as it is a free repair if under 3 years.

A kit like this should do, but try and go for the ones with a reasonable thermal paste and nylon washers:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XBOX-360-X-Clamp-Fix-Kit-RRO...

Rather than explain it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uMsO0fB6mw&ann...

Basically the repair takes the give out of the board from the X-Clamp and makes the board less likely to flex under heat. Easier to do than it sounds, I used a small and narrow flat headed screwdriver and a couple of torx bits (8 and 10.)

Once you've taken it to bits it's just a case of cleaning the old thermal paste off the processors, something like acetone on one of the cotton ears buds did the trick for me. And then screwing it all back together. It sounds more technical than it is and just don't overtighten the screws due to it being plastic/aluminium!

if you not cormfortable doing it then normally there are guys in local paper or ebay that will do it for around £30.
