Not running Linux, but chipped it myself (xecuter 2.3 pro) no problems and it runs great as a media center - either off DVD/CDR or streamed off my main PC via the LAN. Best £35 I ever spent for the thing; well impressed with it.

Funny enough, I was asking a mate about this the other day. This is what he had to say about the subject (disclaimer : I haven't read up about it myself, so I dont know how true this is) ...

This web site tells you everything you could want to know about chipping an x-box, I'm trying to find out the specific one you could order, it's off a web site, then all you need to do is open it (6 screws) and then screw it to your motherboard.

www.xbox-scene.com

You should be able to find out what version of Xbox you have from here, it will also tell you where it was made and also what manufacturing line it was
made on!!:

http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/docs/versionsfinding.html

Once you have your version (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, or 1.5) you just need to make sure you order a corresponding chip, you can get chips that do all of them, like this one:

www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/xb-xbit.html

But I've not tested one of these and I think there is a bit of a question about the BIOS versions and upgrading the RAM on the mod

The solder ones are preferable if you're competent with a soldering iron, but the screw-down ones have a mixed bag of good versus bad reviews... YMMV, as they say.

Once you're chipped, it all starts from the above website address - first thing you will need to do is get yourself accustomed to mIRC and IRC, because you will not find any 'software' on the internet - Microsoft clamped down on that yonks ago and threw the book at anyone distributing what they considered 'illegal' code. Head for #xbins or #xbinshelp and you're sorted.

And be careful with D0 ;-)
