X-box live, BT and modems
Discussion
I'm about to get broadbanded and I'm pretty sure that BT are being a bit cheeky by asking for £60 for a "gaming" modem.
I have no intention f paying this.
Are the X-box ports the same as a regular bband modem? If so can I just unhook one and plug in the other?
Also if they are I suspect a router will be cheaper than their "gaming modem" anyway.
Who's doing what and how?
Any and all advice appreciated.

is the standard BT modem USB?
personaly i would just go for a router and stick a network card in your PC... then its just a case of swaping the cables. Unless of course you pay abit extra and get a router with built in hub/switch or alternatively get a separate hub to use like me
router is better as if would pinch CPU cycles like a USB modem...

There are two types of device connecting you to BT -
1. USB modem which has a connection at one end which goes into the wall and a USB connector at the other end to go into your PC. To use your XBox with this type you need to setup your PC to pass through the internet connection and connect your Xbox to the PC, probably via a hub. There's instructions on this on www.xbox.co.uk IIRC.
2. A router which allows you to use a regular patch cable to connect a PC or Xbox. I assume the £60 device is a router of some description.
I would recommend the router option. I used a USB modem and pass through when i first got Live and had occasional drop outs and it would choke on the traffic if I ever tried to be the host for a game.
