2 xbox 360's , 1 router, numpty dad question

Hi guys... Help !
NO.2 son now has a 360 in his bedroom along with no.1 son also having one in his.
They are both complaining that the connection to xbox live is poor, Now is this our broadband which is struggling or is the poor old netgear 54mbps the weak link?
The xbox's are hard wired not wireless, we also have a ps3 which is hard wired aswell.
New broadband or new router? Any recommendations truely welcome so as to return to peace and harmony over christmas!!

I doubt it is a problem with the router, especially as you are both hard wired. If only one of you is playing is it okay? What about if one is playing Xbox and one is playing PS3 (both online)?
if it is still a problem when one is xbox, one is ps3, it is definitely your internet connection.
It is probably your internet connection either way as your router should be able to handle the speed. If you do subsequently upgrade your internet you might need a new router anyway but that's a separate issue.
Be careful with this one. Internet speed is only relevant for downloads, the real enemy for online play is lag (or 'ping' or 'latency')
I'm guessing your router plugs into a broadband modem of sorts via ethernet. One of my friends (Gixer) comes round sometimes armed with his 360, we got some lag using his 360 plugged into my Belkin router, which was in turn plugged into a BT Gnomehub. The solution was to plug both XBoxes into the two Ethernet ports provided on the Gnomehub.
Every item you put into the chain will increase lag. It could still be an external problem, but it might be worth trying to connect directly if the number of ports on your modem allows you to.

How do I check actual speed rather than sold speed? we are with AOL from years ago so not on contract or anything so could change easily enough. no AOL software is installed on any computers.
I think from reading above our problem could be that only one ethernet cable serves upstairs and is then split via a box of tricks to the 2 xbox's and a pc. I need to run a seperate cable for the 2nd xbox for best effect if i'm correct.

Try to avoid to many boxes (clients) using wifi at the same time, it adds a good 20ms or so latency to your connection which is significant for online action games, it also gets saturated very easily with 2-3 machines using wifi at the same time. I would say connection as many consoles via wired ethernet is the way to go.
Also you mention AOL, it's been a while since i used AOL (like 7 years or so) but back then they had horrible quality of service for online gaming...
