Gaming going downhill
Discussion
Has anyone else noticed this. But nowadays it seems like gaming is getting somewhat, bad. Yes there are still some good games about, but its almost all focused on graphics now and not really the story of the game and its fun factor in a way. It seems like only driving and shoot em up games are getting better but everything else is taking a fall back down the ladder.
Know what you mean - this has started a thought off in my head.
Name some old and/or budget games that are worth re-installing and reminding yourself just how good some games can be...
1. Any of the LucasArts adventures
2. Grim Fandango
3. Total Anihiliation
4. X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (if you could get it running on a modern-day piece of kit :])
5. Max Payne
etc

That's 'cos they had to rely more on the gameplay back then when you couldn't be blown away by the graphics capable with 8-bit processing power! But.......I think developers still get it right some of the time. Take Halo for example; that is IMO probably the best game ever. it's got everything you mentioned; storyline (backed up with, like all good games like this should be, with 3 sci-fi novels covering the game itself, along with a build-up & aftermath), graphics, gameplay etc etc. But it's like anything nowadays, how original can you make the same old thing that's been done a hundred times before?
I'm also going to say Halo was overrated. It started well, but soon enough all the locations started to look the same. Shoot things, go to next location, shoot more things. Not much in the way of a story.
Max Payne 2, on the other hand, had lots of story, good environments and it was still fun to shoot things!

This is one of those things that people notice every few years or so. I can remember having the same conversations with mates 15 years ago. Thing is, if you go back and play games you used to think were amazing, generally speaking - tho there are exceptions - they're very very very very rubbish now.
I think contemporary games are the best, it's just that the game designers tend to kind of overdo each different game type(?) before they come up with a new idea. So you reach a point where you think - the old games were better.
I mean, asteroids was a classic. But DesetCombat is way better!
Essay over.
Cheers

Ok then, seeing as Halo is "overrated" (the similar-location thing should be sorted for Halo 2 as it was a major gripe for people), what would you guys like to see in a game? Let's see if you can come up with any truly original ideas.
Although it didn't add anything to the gameplay, I thought the showroom mode in PGR2 was pretty cool, along with the truly original sniper rifle in Goldeneye, which is now standard in any FPS.
not having a dig, genuine challenge
