Xbox 360...RROD again...3rd time lucky

yay I am back to crappy PS3 and PSN now, thanks to my xbox having RROD last night just after the forza 3 sunday night series

I was sort of expecting it tbh as the last few time I've used the 360 I have noticed a very distinct whirring sound even when a disc isn't in the tray and also the console has froze-up 4 times this last week (the same symptoms that led to my previous RROD issues)

I'm toying with buying a new (black 120gig) elite as they are supposedly fully sorted as far as RROD issue goes....anyone with a new BLACK 120gig ELITE? how is it going?

I have a Transfer kit on the way so if I do go for the new one I'll be able to fire all my game saves and music across to the new drive no problem



I have had the repair email through and will arrange the pickup via UPS

Had 4 RRODs (all repaired under warranty) within the past 4 years
Bought the Elite 120 GB last year, no problems so far.

One thing does have to be said for the PS3 and there seems to be less people wanting to cheat/having modified controllers on it from what i've seen/read anyway.

You will need to redl all your DLC as its authored to the console.

My son's Elite has been on holiday to Germany twice in the last 10 months with the RROD. Suffers the same issues as the standard Xbox. Both the current 'standard' Xbox and Elite are the same internally. Just paying for the bigger Hard drive and different colour. Sorry to be a doom-monger!

The PS3 is now horizontal...and the Xbox 360 will be too once it has been fixed

It is worth a try I guess, if it helps to prevent any future failure

My Xbox is kept horizontal too. It's few years old now... no problems at all (touch wood!)

Quick Question regarding repair of RROD. What qualifies you for repair under warranty?

I recently purchased a 20gb 360 to have a play on Forza amongst other things but I bought it second hand without a box from a private seller. If mine gets RROD (no signs of it yet!) will I be able to get it repaired under warranty or do you need the original receipt?

Out of interest, does your power supply say 175w on it or 205w?

From what I've heard, it's only the 205w xboxes (both elites and white ones) which regularly suffer rrod. Unfortunately when you send one back for repair you get a refurbished 205w one back, rather than one of the newer 175w consoles.

After having two xboxes go on me I got myself a second hand one and have modified it to hopefully last a bit longer than your standard one

you don't send the power supply box away...you dont send ANYTHING apart from the console...you are instructed over the phone to remove the Hard Drive and make sure there isnt a game in the unit before packing it up in a plain box for UPS to collect it

I've had my Elite for a year, it stands on it's end on the carpet and remains on for up to 10 hours at a time sometimes.

I went through the diagnostics on the net, and if the light was a certain colour on the power pack they would send you a new power adapter as a first try, and then if this does not fix the issue they would then collect the Xbox.

My Xbox is being collected tomorrow, but i will be buying a Xbox Elite for £200 before xmas with COD6 and Forza 3, so i can play linkup at home...

Its also good enough for some of the Sky Channels in the bedroom, and as a media centre extender..

my light on the power suppy is the correct colour...green , while the Ring of light is showing RROD

you can see it in the background in the picture in the opening post

It was around the time I was buying mine that the new chipset was released (you could still find both in the shops) and I was advised on another forum to check the power rating and make sure I didn't get an old one.

The newer ones run much cooler and quieter and it seems to of been good advice as every RROD I've heard of has been a 203w console. The fact that they send the old ones back out would also explain why most people seem to get loads of RROD or none at all. (although I'm sure someone will appear to contradict me shortly)

Might be worth kicking up a fuss and seeing if you can get a replacement with the new chipset, rather than the usual free live/whatever, especially as this isn't the first time.

regardless of whether they fix or replace mine this time I will still have the 203w power supply


I guess I will have to get the new eite out of the box in the store to check what power supply it has, IF I decied to go for one ... very tempted tbh

Just to throw another fish in the boat. My power unit says 150w, and KI have a c. 2 month old black elite.

Unlucky Chris. Get it sorted ASAP.
