Well it arrived this morning.. so we've been playing it most of the day rather than working..

unfortunately, I have to say that the first half an hours impression.. is rather underwhelming.

I understand that there are unlockable cars (maybe tracks too), but I can't read japanese, so it's difficult to tell...

the selection of cars you start off with is utter Shte... nothing remotely exciting, or even anything new, save for a VERY slow datsun.

also only 5 tracks to start with...

2 circuits which look pretty similar to GT3, but with more contrast, slightly higher poly-counts, and nice lighting

2 cities.. New York and an Italian town. BOth look very nice, but nothing groundbreaking.

1 Grand Canyon! this track looks absolutely awesome.. the canyon is beautiful. crowds that wave and move back if you approach, people taking photos in the middle of the road and leaping away at the last minute.. V.nice. only problem is that the track is lined with invisible walls.. i.e. you can't drive onto the grass or anything like that.. the driveable area is also very narrow, so you hit these invisible walls often, completely destroying the illusion.

You have to do THE MOST TEDIOUS licenses to get other cars.. which, for a demo, I really couldn't be arsed to do.. yet.

I will persuade someone else in the office to do these, and then have another go with the unlocked cars

also, there's only arcade mode, so no simulation tyres, so you can't get a proper fell for what their supposed new handling physics has done for the game... in arcade, the cars do seem to slide a little more than in GT3, but nothing approaching the simulation tyres....

to sum up:

not all that impressed with the demo.. but hopefully the variety of cars will save it...

is the handling basically the same then? do they always understeer unless you powerslide, or left foot brake(so to speak)all the time?

Having only just been playing GT3 for a while (cos it was cheap and the g/f got a PS2 as a prezzie), I'm interested in the dynamics.... A friend with Proj. Gothem II remarked that with each new car it is like learning to drive again. I've tried it briefly and can say that a Cobra doesn't turn into corners as well like a Caterham. Just like reality then. He said the Noble can be chucked into corners at silly speeds. More reality.

Anyway, it is me, or in Gran Turismo (4 included) is there no real concept of accurate handling (i.e. a standard MR2 Mk 2 should be a sack of lard round corners compared to an Elise) ? With the huge number of cars in GT4 is the performance of cars going to be based on power/weight? Saying all this though, having the ability to modify cars means that there are too many variables to model?

Anyone got any links to more information on this subject?

In reply to Richard's post..

the handling in GT kicks ass compared to PGR2...
BUT, you have to turn off the driver aids, and buy simulation tyres to really get into the epths of it..

once you've done that, the nuances of trailing the throttle into corners, holding steady revs whilst drifting for hundreds of meters, left-foot braking (or should that be 'second-finger-braking'), and real use of the analog buttons and stick come into play.. it's simply sublime!

In GT4 prologue however, there is only the arcade mode, so you are stuck with (same as arcade in GT3) stuck-to-the-road-with-glue handling, and only really getting it to slide under heavy provovation... GT4 is however slightly better than GT3 in this respect, as the cars do move about under heavy braking and lift-off etc.

by comparison, PGR2 is a mere arcade racer. (albeit quite a good arcade racer)

also, you can't win races in GT3 with simulation tyres, as they're much slower (because they have realistic grip levels), but I don't play it to win the races anymore... I just spend hours trying to get "the perfect drift-lap"....

if I had a DVcam with analogue-in, I'd post some vids

edited to ad: DMC, please cut some of that list out.. it takes half an hour to scroll to the next message..

PIER, u sound like u try soo hared to make the car just drift a bit. Its fairly simple. DOnt be soo delicate on it. Just lots of speed into the corner. slam on the brakes and flip it sideways and just keep it going. Bah, sim tyres, hate em. i can drift perfectly with super softs. Driver aids suck though.

and if the list takes too long to scroll there is the little "end" key. or page down also.

hmm.. but not exactly how it is.. is it?!?!?
"loads of speed and throw it into the corner" usually results in "exiting corner backwards via hedge"...

the sim-tyres do a much better job with the finer details... and require more effort to drive/drift well... with the normal tyres, it's as easy as you say.. rather defeating the point..

well mate, ill have to try and get some replays into video format and show u the joys of lots of speed and throwing it. Just have to know how to do it.

and also, its getting the prologue worth it. Im debating over wether i should order it or not.

off to play gt now and try ur little sim tyre things.

Thanks very much. I will give them a go. Just making slow steady progress through the game and have never got round to trying them.

Am glad I splased out on a wheel/pedals though

don't get me wrong unlicensed... I can do it with the normal tyres... I'd just be very surprised if you didn't find it much more controllable and more of a challenge with the sim-tyres... give them a good go, and see what you think..

bear in mind though, that they'll never be as fast... but a hell of a lot of fun!

to the other post.. I don't think it's worth buying the prologue.

you don't get to race against anybody (only you on the track), and the selection of tracks is very limited.

there is a decent selection of cars, but nothing particularly exciting, apart from the macca F1 GT.

(haven't finished all the licenses mind.. suggest you read the review in Edge or similar)

interesting fact: Polyphony have apparently already paid for the development costs for GT4 via sales of the Prologue... as it's been No1 in the japanese charts for ages... takes the piss really... all that money they're going to make world-wide when the full game is released.. will be pure profit!!! me likey a bit of their royalties payout!!!

Depends - there are some good challenges to be found if you drop down to the Amateur series:
e.g. Delta Integrale, all the mods, sim tyres, center diff wound all the way to the rear - the 4x4 series (Apricot Hill and Grand Valley being the best two), only five laps but mucho sideways fun to be had.

(From memory, the Turbo series is just that little bit harder - 2nd/3rd place finishes are more likely than wins)

nobody knows the exact list for sure aside from what you can get in the prologue. At least they got a macca F1

as unlicensed said, no concrete list as yet..

but I'd bet on all the cars in GT3, plus the Macca F1 GTR, Ford GT, Nismo 350Z and some other nice things :-)

There is a "making-of" video which you unlock in the Prologue... which has footage of the Polyphony team recording cars (pictures/sounds etc)... some interesting cars of note:

Ginetta G4
Mini Marcos
TVR Grantura(sp?)

those were ones that I noticed.. there are more, but it's all 'fast-forward' footage, so hard to spot lots... I'll watch it again on monday..

IIRC Nacnud took his car to the testing for the GT4 game developers, there is a thread somewhere about the cars that they were testing....

I've been playing Gran Turismo for the last seven years and still havn't found a driving game more in tune to reality. Can't wait for GT4 but I did hear a rumour that it's release date has been put back to the summer due to development reasons. Can anyone enlighten me or is this old news.

Just hope the list of TVR's in GT4 is as interesting as the one posted on here.....

Edited to say - just seen the delayed post....

good cars =

JGTC Supra (awesome noise!!)
Ford GT
Mac F1 GTR long-tail
JGTC NSX
350Z Nismo

not that much that's new/special.. but nice cars none the less...

can't wait.. and wait.. and wait.. and wait..
for the full game to come out!
