Hello all just a quick query to see what the opinion is on paying to get my xbox360 repaired vs. buying a brand new one?
Originally bought in September 2006 and was sent back for a £60 fix in March 2008 when the picture stopped working, it has just had the dreaded 3 red rings.
Are the newer ones any more reliable? Do they come with better features? And crucially an extended warranty! Know of the HDMI cable which would be good.

BTW the elites don't come with any high def cables standard. Only the ability to use them.
Pick up a £3 HDMI cable from ebuyer if you want hdmi.
Also I believe the 3 year extended warranty was only for older xboxes. The elite will have 1 year warranties.

thats random. i got the component one with red,wht,yel,grn,blue,red and also a small 2ft hdmi lead. Also got an audio splitter adaptor for running hdmi sound via a stereo.Only standard red white yellow connector and a scart adapter.

1) In your situation I'd get a new console, in fact I did. Everybody I know who's had them fixed for free or otherwise has had them die again within 6 months.
2) A new arcade is £160. if you've only got a 20Gb hard disc I'd consider the elite with a 120Gb drive as you'll need the space sooner or later.
3) Avoid cheap 2nd hand ones, they'll have been repaired, abused or worse and you don't get the 3 year warranty.
4) The current 360's have 45nm CPU and GPU, meaning that they run quieter and cooler. Given that heat caused the older xboxes to fail, they should be more reliable. Warranty returns are down in 2009 suggesting that this is the case. They also have an HDMI port. None ship with either a high def componen cable or HDMI cable, so budget £10 for one.

I picked one of these up (two in fact but that's another story) and they come with the standard component AV cable only, NOT an HD one or HDMI. There's a nice little note telling you to buy the official leads if you want High Def though.....WeirdNeville said:

As a thought, it may be worth when the warranty runs out upgrading the fans for quieter/better ones as well - I'm running a twin Talismoon upgrade in mine (repalces the single standard fan) and it's a lot quieter (a blessing for DVD's) and hasn't let me down yet!

Thanks for all the rapid responses guys! I will ring up the helpline when I get home to see how much a fix costs and if I can sweet talk them into a free one (only a month out of the 3 year warranty!)

It is a noisy beast. That was why the first thing I did when it was out of warranty was replace the fans It's about 10 times louder than the PS3.
A tenner and it's down 3dB and flows 46CFM instead of 29. Hopefully that'll be enough as mine is one of the early ones (it's nearly 5 years old now!)I have some other changes I want to make to it now as well, mostly around the cooling area though I might move the whole thing into a different case so I can use normal PC stuff without worrying about clearances.
