Dust 514 and Eve Online - Exciting new gaming direction??
Discussion
So I've just found out about Dust 514. This will be a console only game (360 and PS3) which will interact directly with the hugely complex environs of the PC only MMO of Eve Online.
I've played Eve Online, I know some of it's lore and I know some of the recent in-game events, the complexity and scale of which never cease to amaze me. The idea that a console game can integrate and interact with that environment also fills me with awe and excitement.
Without getting into the technical challenges that this presents CCP, the fact that they are trying this at all seems to me to be a very bold step and a radical new direction for gaming.
What next? One account for 2/3 games over several platforms for seamless accrual of XP, rewards and story bound goodies? Capture a ship in Dust and fly it in Eve? Capture a Mine or Processing plant in Dust with your squad and then use it to inflate your Eve Corp's Isk account, thereby funding your war efforts? Strategically Gate-camp a system to death, thereby preventing re-supply of Dust squads?
Imagine creating specific cross-platform alliances in order to further your Corporation's goals, that's very cool IMO.
All very interesting and it'll take time to develop - but one can almost imagine a world in 10 years time with real time interaction between such different gaming scenarios and personally I find that very exciting indeed!

There is various speculation on how 'console only' Dust will be. Ambulation/'Walking in stations' (now referred to by another name that escapes me, I think) has been in development for years and a crossover between those and Dust would seem to be an obvious thing - I think Dust may even be due out later (both sometime in 2010 was a rumour).
It's something with huge potential, but might need delicate handling to avoid overly annoying sovereignty holding 0.0 players.
I think Fanfest this year may put to rest a lot of speculation (and probably generate a whole new lot!)
(FWIW, I don't currently play Eve and don't think I've ever posted to the Eve thread, but I was a long time player with characters in various large alliances - ASCN, BoB, etc. and I've followed things from a distance.)
