So PS3's DO go wrong.......

Powered up last night for my nightly therapy (2/3 hours of blowing yanks to bits on CoD4), The PS powered up and got to the XMB.... All's good so far, Yes?
Put CoD4 in the drive and it whirred up like normal, but the disc icon logo thingy under the "game" tab, wouldn't appear.... I was immediately worried so I ejected CoD4 and put in MotorStorm, which I last played at Christmas... Whirred up again but the graphic wouldn't appear.....
Has the laser burnt out? Just found out that it was brought 30/06/08, so the b
h is out of fricken warranty.
Unless some of you guys know a fix, does this mean im gunna have to shell out 145 quid for a reconditioned unit or what?

Couple of options, but first I would get yourself over to the PS3 section on the AV forums. Lots of advise there.
Firstly Sony may replace it anyway as it is reasonable to assume that something like a PS3 should last for more than a year, there are many people who have had their PS3's replaced outside of the 1 year time frame.
If that doesn't work then you could sign up for continuous play insurance, wait a week and then tell them your PS3 is duffed. They should replace it. This is however fraud and I would not recomend it.

I would have a look on Google to see what other people have done in the same situation. I also rang up a local repairer when mine went pop, to see whether it would be a good idea to repair it, which it wasn't.
I shelled out the £145 and i'm now on a remanufactured one which switches off sometimes without any warning.

PS1 - so that would have been the old days when Sony were actually profitable....Spoke to Sony customer support, I had a new PS the next day and they collected the old one.
I wouldn't count on the same response now!
I'm a bit worried about mine as it's one of the early consoles bought on launch day and apparently they're quite vulnerable to the YLOD. However, it gets little use, so then again I might be ok.

Mine did the same a few weeks back.

They picked it up one Monday and the following Monday I got my machine back all fixed. Was a UK call centre and all very helpfull.
