confused - 2G ifone with latest upgrades

I bought the new 3GS but have the old 2G Ifone which the Butler wants to put his alternative work network sim in to use. I've read so many threads I am totally confused as many refer to versions of software and talk about jailbreak and unlock etc and I dont really understand the difference.
I upgraded the old 2G iphone to the latest software as of yesterday and it would be good to have the ability to update it further as time goes on but the real need is to allow his Vodaphone sim in it.
I am not very brave on the pc (I have a Mac OS X 10.5.7) and need a fool proof blow by blow account of what to do that wont go wrong. Can someone help please? All software e.g. itunes etc latest version.

Go to the iphone dev blog and read the latest blog post. you need to use redsn0w which is the latest and only thing to unlock version 3. T'was released yesterday. It's a pretty straight forward point and clicky thing. There is a version for intel mac and windows so just download the right one.

The same software. I did it yesterday.

Do this:

Update itunes to 8.2.
Update the firmware on your phone to 3.0 with itunes.

Itunes will then say - "Welcome to your new phone, activate with itunes now blah blah etc"

Close iTunes.
Download redsn0w from that website.
Launch it.
Select the firmware on your drive, i'm not sure where it is on a mac. The file is called itunes-????-3.0???.ipsw, its around 230mb, the firmware that itunes downloaded, google for where it is if you cant find it.
click next.
at some point there is a check box for unlock, make sure its checked, then just click next a few more times, wait about 5 minutes and its done.

you might want to try putting this in the computer section rather than the games section as I don't think cyberface etc frequent here and those guys are most likely to know the answers.

I have tried it, on my 2G iphone, yesterday, and its not running on O2, and I was even able to call my mother afterwards.

But yeah this should be in the other forum.
