Now I'm MAD!!!

Civ 2 is THE game I'd take to my desert island. (IMHO Civ 3 is no better, just more graphics.)
Best trick is to save after each few moves as a separate file - that allows you to go back a few moves to *before* they nuked you and either build an SDI or take them out first.
Though I've always found the Aztecs to be OK - it's the Mongols and Greeks you have to watch out for.
(no, it's not real time)

Civ = Civilisation = a turn based build cities/harvest fields/make technology advances/have diplomacy/have wars game.
It gets fun when the nukes, cruise missiles + stealth bombers turn up - you can nuke someone back to the dark ages, or you can nuke them while they are still in the dark ages if they got a little isolated and left behind
PS and no speed cameras on the roads you build!!!

Before you attack, send spies in to each city to nick technology.
It's very compulsive because you play one country and the computer plays up to 7 others. Some of them are puny weeds, others are aggressive bastards who make life hell. It's a game you can really grow into.
And of course, justas you're planning to do something, the computer makes its moves and messes up all your plans. Hours simply disappear!

That's an idea - if you're short of cash you could build speed cameras on all your roads. Govt funds increase but the economy slows down and eventually you get a riot and get killed by a furious mob of repressed motorists...
