Anyone seen the screen shots for driver 3? now that looks like another seriousely cool game that seems to have got lost in the hype of other new entries. Also Need for Speed underground seems to be a good short term blatting game.

if it is anywhere near as the last Driver game then we are in for a treat.

Do you know which formats it will be on? Will it only be PS2 and PC?

Driver2 never came out on the PC, only the original.

"amazon" review:

Developer Reflections has revealed that Driver 3 is based on an enhanced version of the Stuntman engine. Aside from basic optimisations, the updated engine now allows for vehicle doors to be opened and self-shadowing from the various vehicle parts. Moving on from the cars of Driver and Driver 2, Driver 3--like Vice City--allows you to get behind the wheel of any vehicle in the game, with larger trucks and boats added for good measure. Sadly, though, the game will not feature any licensed vehicles. Providing more than the single cities featured in other games, Driver 3 is set in Miami, Nice and Istanbul, with huge areas of each carefully recreated. Each city will weigh in with around 30 square miles of roads plus interiors to explore, so it's going to take you a long time to see everything the game has to offer.

30square miles isn't really that big, 7 1/5 miles by 7 1/2 miles. High Wycombe is bigger than that!

But do you realis ehow much work goes into constructing a CG city 30 square miles big?

Building a city in 3D

Take/find pictures of said city.
Decide what constitutes important buildings in the city.
Create a 3D model of the first building, then go into photoshop and make up textures for building, ie windows, doors brickwork etc.
Then build 3 lower detail models of that building.

Repeat above for every single important building in city. In the meantime others are doing the same for street furniture and general landscape (road layout etc.)

When you have done all landmark buildings, start again with generic building to fill in spaces.

Then optimise the lot.

Time taken probably about 1 - 2 years.

Long and tedious.

No, we have a games tester for that, although we do get a copy when it's finished.
