Couple of days ago my disc drive started making horrible scraping sounds, then I got read errors.
It's fine, normal and quiet playing DVD's but playing games it throws a wobbly and makes all the fuss. For some reason GTA4 (the main game I'm playing at the mo) is the worst, In fact it takes about 3-4 attempts of opening and shutting the disc tray before it registers and plays. It just comes up with 'open tray' usually on the menu. It's quiet when the game gets going, just on start up it makes all the noise.
Earlier on, it loaded the game like a DVD, came up with the DVD menu and a warning saying 'This is not a DVD, it must be played on an Xbox 360' WTF it is in an xbox 360
Just now mid game it kicked me off too, made an even more louder noise then usual and cut out. Went back to xbox menu and 'open tray' its just not recognising the disc.
Anyone else have this problem, what should I do?

It has been giving me regular unreadble disc errors since the day I bought it. Tonight it crashed a load of time trying to watch vids on the inside 'X-box' thing.
If I bought a toaster and it kept saying 'bread untoastable please remove bread and retry' I'd be in Dixons like a shot demanding a new one but with the X-box they just fob you off to Microsoft and tell you to expect the RROD soon. I've never known a console like it.

Well I went with 0% of pistonheads voters on the issue, and decided to attempt fixing it, and yahoo! I done it 
My Xbox is currently nekkid, but at least it works, it had something to do the the magnet which helps hold the disc in place, basically it came loose (causing grinding sound) and as soon as a disc was removed the magnet shot up and stayed above where it was supposed to be, so the disc was insecure and the lens could not read it.

basically take it all apart, glue the bottom of the magnet back where it's supposed to be and put it all back together.

Word of advice would be to "install" your games to the hard drive, all you need to have is the disc in the tray for verification (to stop piracy), then the game loads and plays with a static disc, sorted.

Mine has started making some horrific screeching noises, but only with some games, which is strange. I've already had it in bits and could see anything obviously wrong with the drive. I'm on the verge of just buying another off ebay but might be worth taking it to bits again.
Why, in the name of baby jesus, did MS decide making it easy to just swap out the DVD drive (which is a piece of pi$$) was a bad idea? As I understand it putting a new drive in, which would only cost £25 quid, involves plugging the thing into your PC and "flashing" it. Fvck that!

I can't find the exact video, youtube does mainly seem to be of people showing the problem rather then the solution, but there is a couple on there if you search 'Xbox 360 tray'

From what I've seen on youtube there is quite a few things that go wrong though, so yours isn't necessarily the same problem

I've had my xbox since Oct/Nov 2006 so maybe the ones this age are going now, I'm not someone who uses it 15hours a day 7 days a week, just occasionally for recreation to give some idea on its useage before all this happened.
