X Box -LIVE- what's needed

Wife went out & thought she'd bought X Box Live for the lad for Xmas- what she actually bought was just the card ! Doh- without telling me. Now I know you need more than that but can you online gamer types tell me what other hardware is best to get to set it up please?
Obviously he has the console & we have Virgin Media cable with 10Mb broadband already, although the PC is in the room across the hall from the X Box. There is a Virgin feed into the X Box room for cable TV but not sure if B/band connection still there.

What you will need to do is either wire your son's xbox into your hub or into you're computer. Or if you've got wireless, buy the wireless adaptor and connect that way. Wiring it in is better though for connection 
Once that is done turn the xbox on. then tab over to xbox live. Select account setting and the hit set up xbox live gold account. it will ask you for either a card number or a voucher code (which will be on the car your wife bought). More importantly the first thing it will do is install the new dash board which can take a while so don't worry. Hope your son likes the Nintendo WII!!!

TR-no hub (that I know of) do you mean like those USB hubs you can buy? Our Virgin connection is simply a box on the wall with cable feed coming out from underneath to TV and there was a broadband cable when PC was in the same room. Actually there is a Virgin phone point too coming from same box IIRC.
I'm not sure if there's still a connection to take a BB feed from that into X Box.
By the way does running X Box Live interfere with PC internet use via same ISP?

Not really, the PC will interfere with the Xbox more, especially if its downloading.I'm not sure if there's still a connection to take a BB feed from that into X Box.

Xbox is more sensitive to upload changes rather than downloads.
Are there any spare RJ45 sockets on the back of your virgin box??
HI-Thanks. The Virgin wall box appears to be a unique thing to them about 10cm tall x 7cm wide with cable dropping down from underneath. The RJ45 point you show is a Data point right ? I have never seen one in their box. They seem to use screw in cable connectors.

I'm on Virgin media and have an xbox.
I have the box on the wall with 2 large cables coming out. One goes to the V+ box, the other to the virgin modem which is plugged into the free Virgin media wireless hub (freebe on 10mb broadband).
For the xbox you can by a wireless transmitter/reciever that communicates with the Virgin hub no worries.
Speak to Virgin on the availability of a free hub, or get to you local PC supplier and buy one.
Phone line is completely seperate.

From what I can remember about the Virgin connections you should have had the following when it was 1st installed:
From the sounds of it you don't have the modem connected anymore?
To setup the Xbox you'll need to re-attach the modem and then connect the Xbox to the modem via the RJ45 points.
Damn beaten to it, also I forgot about the wireless option.
- A wall mounted master connection point, this should have a screw type fitting.
- The Virgin TV decoder box
- A Virgin Broadmand Modem (mine was a black box about 10cm tall) this should have the same screw type fitting as the master connection point and a number of RJ45 points).

JayBM-it sounds like your set up is what we at least had. The modem has been moved to opposite room with cable fed externally round house by Virgin & coming straight into Modem. I think the original box now only has TV feed out of it but I'll have to look at it to see if we can attach a modem cable into it.
Sorry to drag it out but what about wireless router ? Do we need a "sender" device on the modem & a receiver connected to X Box ??
If you've got one of these (or similar) - a dedicated cable modem..
.. then you'll need a router of some sort to share the connection between your Xbox and your PC. If you go for a wireless one, then you'll need to buy a wireless adapter for the Xbox, if you go for a wired one, then you'll need a cable to go from the router to the back of the Xbox.
Alternatively, you could just get a cable long enough to plug between the Xbox and the cable modem and swap the cables over in the back of the modem when you want to use the Xbox (bear in mind you'll have to switch the modem off and on again whenever you swap the cable in the back of it).
