Guitar Hero; I NEEED it! Please educate me...

Hello hello....

Well. This weekend I went to a friend's house and he had (on PS3) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

What an addictive game!!

Now, I have a Wii. If I get it on the wii is it the same guitar or is it Wii remote based?

Also - there's 3 versions of the game, is that right? I noticed that the songs in number III weren't really classics (some good ones). Are there better songs in other ones?

You can get it on Wii, you basically slot the wiimote into the guitar and it works like that. Wii isn't the best version to go for as there isn't the full raft of downloadable tracks like you get on PS3 and 360.

You might also want to take a look at Rock Band, where you get 2 guitars, a drum set and someone on vocals on the go.

I did see the rock band thing, but it's far more expensive so don't think I'll be going for that.

You can also get hold of additional guitars and drums for it if you really want to get into the mega-geek mode. So that's probably the best choice.

I've just seen the pop guitar for wii, doesn't look quite as good. is that the consensus, do you know?!

Never heard of it myself, I'd always go for the official stuff personally. My trusty guitar from Guitar Hero 2 is still going strong.

I've got "Legends of Rock" for the Wii. It's great but too hard for me, can't do any of the songs on anything other than easy mode! In fact any song where you need more than three fingers on the fret board stumps me. Any tips???

Just to clear up the point about the wii guitar, the wii remote goes inside, but the guitar has all it's own buttons and whammy bar thingy. Seems well made and responsive.

Count in 4/4(99.9% of songs will have this time signature) time in your head.. i.e. 1.2.3.4.1.2.3.4.1.2.3.4 (drums should help) and practice lots.. and lots, forget the whammy bar to start with.
I played for a week (not solid.. my fingers cant take it) and can do all except a few on hard
also make sure the wii guitar is synchronised - in the options menu, my mates was miles off to start with.

no idea if that helps but its what i did.

Guitars are console specific as well

Thanks. My timing is a bit rubbish but the main problem seems to be my inability to use more than three buttons. Just can't aim my fingers properly.

Hehe yeah it does require rather more commitment, and space, and understanding neighbours...

You need to get used to using your pinky if you aren't already. One finger for each button, keep the fingers on or close to the buttons to minimise movement and reduce aiming problems. Your fingers will be spread out like a spider. To make this comfortable, press the tip of your thumb against the back of the neck behind the buttons and halfway down its width. Pretty much where you'd stick the nail if you were going to hammer it to a wall. Watch classical guitarists on YouTube for clarity on the weird spidery pose you want your "fretting" hand to adopt.

When moving on to 5 buttons, it's simply a case of sliding your hand up one button and using the second button as your root whenever you need to reach the 5th button. Or, even better, if you have long fingers, stretch your pinky across.

Most importantly, spend lots of time practising up-and-down picking, and hammer-ons and pull-offs. If you can get those timing and techniques right the solos will start making sense.

Use one finger per fret, and practice

Then get onto hard mode and you get the 5th fret and fingering changes

As said, timing is 99% of it. Then you find the bands that love to change midway through or have sections where they go on offbeats only. Grr!

hehe, I can see where you're going with that I'm a drummer already, have been for 15yrs and play in a band ( www.thedeccas.co.uk if you're interested ) so I've been around music for a rather long time - but just got so dam addicted to this thing

I wish there was a "Quite Hard" mode... which used all 5 buttons but only had the difficulty of Medium mode.

It's almost impossible to make that step up to having super-hard songs AND more buttons than fingers, for me... if it was one or the other I'd be fine!

Apparently in GH:World Tour there's a "very easy" mode! I thought Easy was easy enough.



Amazing game though - one that you think might be a bit rubbish but is actually completely compulsive.

Finally cracking Muse's "Knights of Cydonia" on Medium was a big gaming moment for me. Those damn galloping triplets!

You'll be surprised how much a rest from play will benefit you the next time you start it up, songs that were really tricky you'll then find to be quite achievable, something to do with your muscle memory and it needing time to put things in order.

The very easy mode you mention involves holding down no buttons and simply strumming the strum bar in time with the notes, it's almost insulting so most people quickly ask to be put onto easy.

I'm at a stage between Hard and Expert myself, most songs can be cracked on Hard and a lot of the easier ones on Expert, but when you start getting into the tricky numbers like the Muse track you mention, then even Hard is fiddly enough.

Possibly aiming your sights a bit high there

All this talk of Guitar Hero prompted me to ask for World Tour at Christmas with the fancy new guitar too. Girlfriend would kill me if I got the whole set as we've nowhere to keep the drums.

I found Knights of Cydonia easier on Expert than Hard due to those "galloping treplets" actually being different notes so you can finger tap the entire section if your timing is right. I've got one song left on Expert to complete, One by Metalica, I can't do it. I just can't. Not played it for a long time now though.
