I brought fallout 3 today for my xbox 360 (because of all the games out this Christmas, this will give be the most indepth and not just plain shooting like gears etc).

Am I the only one who seems to find the game a little boring?

To be fair, I am only 30 minutes into the game (lol), but it seems like there is nothing to do because the whole wasteland is, obviously, just a deserted wasteland. I did consider returning the game but that would not be fair on the game, because I am just settling into the game. I am a fan of Morrowind (got this and Oblivion), but my questions remain:

1) Can I do the whole double crossing thing in Fallout 3? In Oblivion and Morrowind, I could double cross people and factions, and even get in fights with bandits. Does this happen in F3?

2) Are there any stripclubs? (I know that's a bit surreal to ask but I'm just interested lol). Can you have a girlfriend?

3) Can you buy houses? Take out money from a bank? Get drunk?

Without giving any spoilers, what interesting things can be done? It does seem to be a waste that there is such vast land to explore, but I have to walk everywhere and there is nobody there really (well I guess the circumstances will prevent a bustling city). I know there is fast travel, but this ruins the game I feel. Would be good if I could drive?

P.S. Anyone looking forward to Race Pro?

Thanks

Head to Megaton - it's not far from where you start, and there should be a marker on your map. It unfolds from there.

Unless RPGs really aren't your thing, you'll quickly find yourself sucked in.

(FWIW, I felt similar after an underwhelming first 30 mins, and I had been a HUGE fan of Oblivion, and the earlier Fallout titles. Stick with it - it will pay you back in spades)

Whilst there aren't factions as such, you can either do good things and keep a town or area on side or go in guns blazing and steal everything. There is also the karma rating. Do good things and it goes up. This makes various things easier, but also some things harder. As for the locations, once you have been to any one place it will be kept on the world map. You can then fast travel back to it at any time you are outside, ie it won't work from within a building. There are two houses that can be obtained/given to you, but since you're only just starting, I'm not telling you how. Oh, no strip clubs and whilst you can drink beer, it won't make you drunk. It will alter your base characteristics for a while though.

I just arrived at Megaton before I made this thread. Decent place, got a few interesting missions and choices to make (won't say as it may be spoilers for someone else).

The worst thing by far is not just the lack of a car to go to another location for the first time, but all the damn dangerous animals! You can't go anywhere without some stupid rat or fly harassing you. Raiders I can understand, that's fair enough. Cliffracers in Morrowind where bad enough, but this is worse. frown

Going from A-B is a mission in itself.

It gets much easier to get around as you level up and start to find some decent weapons.

I hated Oblivion and thought it was too slow to suck me in but Fallout 3 did, it helps having a mate that goes on about it all the time too hehe
There is no cars, you can see how most of the cars fared, they are scattered around, you'd need a big land rover anyway as most of the wasteland isn't flat and I've yet to see a vehicle like that around, just the usual American big saloon style cars.

If you want drunk, stripclubs and girlfriends, I suggest you get Grand Theft Auto 4. Similar sort of game but different execution.

Once you've been somewhere you can fast-travel (by just clicking on it, no walking at all) using the map in your pip-boy.

And if you're really lazy you just look up the cheat that gives you all the locations, so you can still play the game and do all the missions, but don't have to walk anywhere anymore ;-)

how far do you need to go before you can start the side missions...

I've left megatron (where i couldnt do the side missions because none of my attributes were high enough) and just in a subway on the way to the big city - i dont want to do too much of the main quest too early though?

Whens a good time to split off and adventure without beind stumped at every turn?

Have you spoke to Lisa in Megaton? she gives you a side quest which is good pace for starting out in.

If you go directly east from megaton you might get the 'Those!' quest, I wouldn't do that for a while, as the fire ants are quite hard.

I personally went up to the Galaxy news radio quest, once you do that, its worth exploring and it gets easier to level up, you could also carry onto until you find dad, and when the quest starts mentioning going to the citadel, things get harder... so don't go beyond that for a easier life smile

While I'm here... There is a bloke in the water processing plant in megaton who mentions pressure is low and there is 3 leaks, although it wasn't a set quest I fixed them and he is never there whenever I go back to let him know I've fixed it.

If you skills are too low for the 'children of the atom' mission, a bit of delving will give you performance enhancing drugs so you CAN complete it one way or the other.

If you think the molerats and flys are bad wait until you come across a deathclaw or Muirlock.....those things are so heavly armoured.

How is best to deal with Deathclaws? I have a few decent weapons, am well levelled up, but they still make mincemeat out of me (especially more than one at a time).

They even killed Dogmeat... sniff..

I've only come across 2 deathclaws and killed them quickly. So not really felt the full force of them.

Bottlecap mines are my tactic, just throw them and walk backwards, they do about 300damage, so 2 usually kills them.
I've been collecting the bottlecap mine ingredients and make loads, they are the best custom weapon to make, uses some caps, sensor module, lunchbox and cherry bombs, so I always take these back to my house, most other bits I don't bother with.

currently lvl 7 and near lvl 8

got rid of the problem of the talon mercs by going back an hour in the saves and pickpocketing a few people badly, so lost karma and am a neutral mercenary instead of some saviour of the wastelands

got several quests open, currently trying to go into the raider base near the southwestern corner of the map, it looks to contain some super mutant, was going to try and deliever some letter, but the raiders are shooting at me and so have to die smile

tend to take as much as possible back to the house, some stuff seems useless but will come in useful smile

fast travel is good when stripping areas of loot

not into rpg's much, tried oblivion, it is still on the pc but not been used for a while

this game rocks, reckon the megatron and the vault is 1% of the game smile

Dart gun to both legs and they are then extremely slow and any decent gun will see them off before they get close to you.

Same thing works for the Yao Guai as well, tho they are obviously less of a problem to begin with.
