PS3 Update 2.50 Grief

I switched the PS3 on for my son last night and it told me an update was available. I thought I would just download it and get it out of the way. It took a while and by the time it was downloaded my boy went off to bed. It gave me the option of shutting the system down when the update was complete. I did that and thought no more about it. Tried the PS3 today and all it does is displays Sony Computer Entertainment and the wavy thing on the screen as normal but that is it. I cant get anything on the screen. No opportunity to login or do anything. Please help

might sound silly but switch it off by the back off the console, leave it five then try again.... other than that go to the forum on ps3-hacks.com they should help
