wii mariokart online - no players?

Just got mariokart and can connect to the internet but when I try and play online it doesn't find any players? Do I need to enable something? I have wiiconnect24 enabled and I can see other players times for time trials and so on.

I found that when I did a search but I assumed I could just log on and play any number of random people. However, all it does it sit there on "searching for players" and nothing else happens.

Select worldwide if you want to check your connection. Not that there won't be many, many people playing within your continent at any one time...

Usually i can get a race with 6+ people within ten seconds, and that is just within australia!
