Getting quite cheap now, Premium must be close to Wii price now, they still about 170?

Hopefully the price of the 120gb hard drive will drop as well as its now the same price as an arcade!

One question for the 360 fans out there.

I'm buying a 360 soon to replace my PS3 (which I'm selling).

The only reason (and I'm being serious here) is so I can play GTA4.

Obviously I want the machine to be as cheap as possible, and preferably new, in fact definitely new because I want full warranty.

So my thought is the cheapy arcade model.

Question, will the cheapo non HD model play GTA4, and will I get any negatives?

I'm not using it for mp3 storage/media centre/browsing/backwards compatability.

But I don't want to be only able to play the game without saving or be limited to offline play only (although I hardly ever go online) Also is online play free on 360??

The arcade i think is similar to the old xbox 360, before HDMI was brought into them. GTA plays fine on it, even though i don't rate it at all. If you've got a full spec HD tv running on 1080P get the HDMI it will be worth it. Online is around £35 a year but is much better than what the PS3 offers. I did own both consoles PS3 has now raised money for a new stereo for my car whereas the Xbox is still comfortable next to the tv.

Id go for the premium one at least, 60gb hard drive is very handy, next dashboard update is going to allow you to copy games to the hard drive to reduce load times and noise(still need disc in for copyright tho), lots of downloadable content available including demos, films, etc...if you've got the extra £40 it really is worth getting.

Plus from a quick look on Game website it looks like Arcade doesnt come with an HD lead (component or HDMI), so unless your purse strings are tight go for premium at least

In all seriousness though, it would be worth getting a 512Mb memory card for it if you are going for the arcade console. IIRC the game saves are about 400Mb alone...

As said above, live costs about £35-40 a year, and to be honest I wouldn't even consider an Xbox if it wasn't for live. So well worth it in my book.

I'm not a fan of GTA myself, but I do recommend Forza2 and COD4, even if it is purely for the online experience!

Game saves are nowhere near 400mb each. Probably around 3-4mb depending on game I'd estimate.

Well I don't have a HDtv so HD leads don't bother me, and I may play Forza but really it will just be GTA4. So it isn't a case of purse strings being tight, I just don't see the point of spending more than needed for one game.

I must be mising something here, but why don't you just get GTA4 for your PS3 and save the money. I'm sure the game will be pretty similar

The next dashboard update gives optional of HD game installs to get rid of drive noise, which is another reason to avoid the Arcade model.

I bought a arcade and ran it on scart to my 32" lcd, after about 2 days i had to go and get a HDMI cable. It made the world of difference


edit to include:

i had no problems saving games on the memory card you get with the arcade(iirc i saved about 6 different games and still had loads of space left) but i did find when i hooked up to live there were so many cool demos and previews that i went on everyones favoite bidding site and picked up a 20gig hard drive for peanuts.

Downloadable map packs and such take a fair bit of room though, best to get the 60GB HDD as a minimum.

Then when game ripping becomes a feature you can store quite a few or your favourite games for mega quick loading and quiet DVD drive'ness

Get the premium with the HDD, otherwise when the download content pack for GTA is released in the near future you'll only kick yourself for not having an HDD to download it onto.

Is there any additional benefit of the Elite over the premium, beyond the extra bundled cable (which is of no used to me, at the moment!), 120Gb HD and the much, much cooler colour?
The Arcade is of no interest to me, so it's Premium or Elite!
I was vaguely considering one, and a price cut seems like a great excuse to buy one!
Forza and GTA4 (I don't think there is much else I want!) here I come!

Can someone clarify this, why can't you play GTA4 on the PS3? Is it something to do with having an SD TV and not being able to read text?

ALL Xbox360's are High Def, they either have HDMI or component connections, both can pass HD and SD signals, but there will be no difference in image between using either connections (on SD ot HD), appart from small changes in colour/ brightness/ etc. due to the TV's implmentation of each connection.

I can play GTA4 on the ps3 (and have gta4 for it, and prefer the ps3 due to free online gaming).

But my old one blew up a month before end of warranty (and was a genuine failure too, not a towel wrap job) so decided to sell the replacement brand spanking new unit as it should achieve almost full price on ebay. Working on the theory that when the games etc. Are sold off, it should leave me about £200 cash on top of enough money to buy a budget 360 and gta4.

To be honest the failure annoyed me, my machines get looked after so well, it wasn't even used much, they couldn't replace it with a 60gig due to them being out of production and the new version is nowhere near as nice looking as the 60gig. I'm also of the attitude that expensive electronic gear should be capable of lasting a few years, yet this new generation of machines seem to struggle to do a few months. While I'm prepared to take a gamble on £120 of xbox360 I'm not prepared to gamble on the ps3 any more, as knowing my luck the new one will last till a week out of warranty next time. I will however go back to it when prices have dropped down massively (2 years or so) and they are reliable.
