Do PS2 & 1 games work on PS3?

Not as far as I know.

Thought that UK spec 80 Gb PS3 would be OK for this but it seems not.

Anyone know for sure which (if any) UK spec PS3's are backward compatible?

the 60gb ones, first gen - that's your lot...

sony cost cut the chip out of the 40/80gb ps3's (same spec, different storage)

I've got the 80g and it plays PS2 fine.. not tried many ps1 games though as i don't have many left.. couple of em worked.. 80G should play PS2 as far as i know though..

Just been looking on-line at prices of PS3, umming and aahing about buying one and it seems that only the "premium" versions, regardless of memory, are backwards compatable.

PS1 games work on PS2s and PS3s.

PS2 games, some work on PS3s, but some do not and some do on some PS3s and not on others.. I think it's after the recent revision
that was done to the PS3..

"Well, it depends which 80GB PS3 you are talking about.

The 80GB PS3 that was included with the 80GB PS3 Motorstorm bundle and the 80GB PS3 bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4 IS backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games.

But, the newer 80GB PS3 model that was recently released for $399 is not backwards compatible with PS2 games... the newer 80GB PS3 for $399 is really just a 40GB PS3 with a larger hard drive because the newer 80GB PS3 has the exact same features as the 40GB PS3 ( 2 USB ports, No Flash Card Slots, No PS2 compatibility).

The older 80GB PS3's that were bundled with Motorstorm and Metal Gear Solid 4 have 4 USB ports, they have Flash Card Slots, and they can play PS1 and PS2 games.


If you really want PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility, the refurbished 60GB PS3 would probably be the best decision.

Plus, the 60GB PS3 uses the Emotion Engine chip for backwards compatibility and is able to play nearly all PS1 and PS2 games, but the older 80GB PS3's that are backwards compatible use Software Emulation for backwards compatiblity and it can't play all PS1 and PS2 games, but it can play the majority of them (around 80%)."
