First play through Resident Evil years ago gave me a couple of good frights (dogs jumping through the windows anyone!) and the last game to make me really anxious was System Shock 2. Since then I thought I'd grown out of being scared by games, too old to suspend my disbelief and what not...

However, in bed tonight, lights off and headphones on playing Silent Hill: Origins on the PSP. Finding it quite immersive when I get to a bit where I'm sneaking really closely past some enemies, loads of tension, I flick the camera to get a better view and it 'clips' into the protagonists head to give this random image on the screen.

I nearly shat! And then immediately p*ssed myself laughing for being such a pussy!yikesrofl

You've got to admit though, quite a freaky sight in the middle of a horror game!

Anyone got any similar recollections?

Steve

Especially when you'd run out of ammo and all you had to fight off the Splicers with was the wrench!

Only two games have made me properly jump they were Oblivion when I went into my first dungeon/cave and was attacked by a troll in the pitch dark and in Gears of War when the first Berserker appears.

Playing Quake, hunched over a lap top, with headphones on. I cleared an area, found it a dead end, and turned to go back to the main area when a secret door had opened and the big b***ard monster appeared.

Getting pounced on by a "head crab" in a darkened airvent in halflife was the last thing to make me jump in a game.

+1

In fact it's the only game I've played where I have seriously crept around and had to stop myself wimpering like a little girl. Properly scare stuff.

Mind you, playing as an Alien is one of lifes joys (Dropping off a roof and biting a Marines head off then running away before his mates can get you laugh now thats fun)

AvP is like Barbie Horse Adventures compared to Thief 3's Shalebridge Cradle Level

Some of the Splinter Cell games don't scare me, but I hate not knowing whats round the corner and hardly having any weapons to take them out with.

I made it about 10 minutes into Bioshock before turning off and never going back to it.

Half life 1, got to the lift then turned off.

HL2 - got to ravenwassname, then turned off.

I really can't manage scary games.

Sticking to racing nowwink

Yep, that got me as well - very atmospheric game.

FEAR had some very scary sound effects which were able to scare me on a couple of occasions

AvP as a marine is the only game I have ever played where I was in a permanent state of terror.

Sure, other games might have things which pop out and make you jump, but in AvP it was alway dark, there was always noises and false alarms and the enemies only attacked occasionally (but with devastating speed and effectiveness when they did). All of which contributed to a constantly building level of tension far beyond anything else.

When the attacks came they were almost a relief!

Doom 3. You're in a darkened area and you can hear something moving, but use the flashlight or a weapon? Made me jump a fair few times

AvP is probably the only game that did this to me, definitely the only game I didn't finish because I was too scared of it!

And the occasional ghost figure walking around and then the flash deja vu moments with the little girl appearing.

Very atmospheric game.
